An ignition system for igniting fuel in a gas turbine or diesel engine is described. The system includes a magnetic core-coil assembly having a magnetic core comprising at least one tape wound toroid of ferromagnetic amorphous metal alloy, a primary winding and a secondary winding. Also included are driver electronics for applying voltage to a spark plug to cause a spark to ignite the fuel. The core-coil assembly and driver electronics are capable of operating with a rapid charge and discharge cycle to produce a high spark pulse rate. In another aspect, a magnetic core-coil assembly is disclosed which has a magnetic core comprising at least one tape wound toroid of ferromagnetic amorphous metal alloy having a permeability ranging from about 250 to 500, a primary winding for low voltage excitation and a secondary winding for high voltage output.

High pulse rate ignition system

A spark ignition system for igniting fuel in an internal combustion engine is described. The spark ignition system includes a magnetic core-coil assembly having a ferromagnetic amorphous metal magnetic core and driver electronics. The core-coil assembly and driver electronics are capable of operating with a rapid charge and discharge cycle to produce a high spark pulse rate.

High pulse rate spark ignition system

A magnetic core-coil assembly generates an ignition event in a spark ignition internal combustion system having at least one combustion chamber. The assembly comprises a magnetic core of amorphous metal having a primary coil for low voltage excitation and a secondary coil for a high voltage output to be fed to a spark plug. A high voltage is generated in the secondary coil within a short period of time following excitation thereof. The assembly senses spark ignition conditions in the combustion chamber to control the ignition event. The assembly is constructed from sub-assembly parts that can be manufactured with existing machines at reasonable cost. The assembly is then potted in a housing consisting of a high temperature polymer.

Magnetic core-coil assembly for spark ignition system

A magnetic core-coil assembly generates an ignition event in a spark ignition internal combustion system having at least one combustion chamber. The assembly comprises a magnetic core of amorphous metal having a primary coil for low voltage excitation and a secondary coil for a high voltage output to be fed to a spark plug. A high voltage is generated in the secondary coil within a short period of time following excitation thereof. The assembly senses spark ignition conditions in the combustion chamber to control the ignition event.

Magnetic core-coil assembly for spark ignition systems

A glow plug having a hollow cylindrical metal shell, an axial electrical terminal, and a heater member protruding externally from the shell. The heater member has a surface film heater element disposed on at least one surface of an electrically nonconductive cylindrical substrate. Electrical connections between the heater element, the shell and the axial electrode are made by conductive surface films. A first conductive surface film disposed on the external surface of the cylindrical substrate makes electrical contact with the shell. A second conductive surface film disposed on the internal surface of the cylindrical substrate makes electrical contact with the axial electrical terminal. The heating element is preferably a transition metal surface film which catalytically reacts with the air/fuel mixture to enhance combustion at lower temperatures. The thermal response time of the surface film heater element from ambient to an operating temperature exceeding 800.degree. C. is less than 5 seconds.

Glow plug having a resistive surface film heater

The helical compression spring which completes the electrical circuit between the interior surface of a tubular ion conductive solid electrolyte gas sensing element closed at one end, and an electrical terminal retained in spaced relation to the open end of the sensing element is close wound adjacent the end exposed to temperatures which would cause open coils of the spring to relax and has a compressed length sufficient to maintain a preselected minimum force against the terminal and sensing element over the full range of operating temperatures to which the sensor is exposed. In an alternate embodiment of the invention, this spring is provided with a closely wound portion at each end so that the sensor can be assembled by inserting the spring either end first.
