A paper web drier section (5) has horizontal upper and lower tiers of dryers (7, 8) defining generally triangular pockets (9). An endless drier felt (10) is trained to run a paper web (W) sinuously successively and in direct contact on the upper perimeter areas of the upper (7) and lower (8) tier driers. Broke is ejected downwardly from the pocket (9). To facilitate such broke ejection, drier felt roll wrap enhancing felt rolls (19, 20) in the pockets are especially oriented for this purpose and define a respective broke-receiving and ejecting subpocket (21) under the upper tier driers (7) at each pocket (9).

In a paper making machine dewatering press section substantially equally pressing and dewatering of both faces of a freshly felted paper sheet web is effected by running the web through first press roll means providing a double action first dewatering nip between corunning porous dewatering felts, and successively thereafter running the web through a four roll stack providing second, third and fourth nips without an open paper draw. In the second nip the web is run in dewatering felt engagement with one face of the web, and the opposite face of the web is in direct non-dewatering surface compacting roll engagement in such nip. In the third nip both faces of the web are in direct surface compacting engagement with the non-dewatering press rolls. In the fourth nip, a second dewatering felt runs in engagement with said opposite face of the web and said one face of the web is in non-dewatering surface compacting press roll engagement. The web leaves the press section as a paper sheet having both faces substantially equally compacted and dewatered.

A web dryer structure for thermal removal of liquid from a traveling web such as a web of paper coming from the press section of a papermaking machine including a row of upper dryer drums and a row of lower dryer drums with the drums positioned to carry the web in a sinuous path successively between upper and lower drums and the web wrapping the upper and lower surfaces of the drums respectively with upper and lower looped felts wrapping the web on the upper and lower surfaces of the drums with the felt guided by felt rolls which for the upper felt is beneath lower drums and for the lower felts are between the upper drums with the felt rolls being hollow roll shells and having glands therein divided so that a first portion of the felt roll faces the onrunning web and a second portion faces the offrunning web with the vacuum means and pressure means connected to the interior of the felt rolls so that one portion is subjected to a vacuum, and the other portion is subjected to a pressure, and the arrangement accommodates running the web in either direction without the necessity to have any open unsupported travel of the web.

A method and mechanism for dewatering a web in a paper making machine having press means, a first thermal dryer section having a long continuous support looped belt carrying the web along a first drying run with rolls and suction zones beneath the web and a hot air generating means for directing a flow of air onto the web in the first thermal run with the web being received substantially 40% bone dry at the beginning of the first thermal run and being delivered substantially 50% bone dry at the end of the run onto a heated drum dryer section.
