Methods and systems for monitoring to assess the health of a fetus being carried within a mother. The methods include sensing fetal heart information using a fetal heart sensor; determining at least one fetal heart rate measure from the fetal heart rate information; detecting umbilical flow information relating to the flow of blood within the umbilical; deriving at least one umbilical flow indicator from at least the umbilical flow information; and analyzing the fetal heartbeat measure and umbilical flow measure to produce at least one fetal health parameter. The systems include the heartbeat sensor, umbilical flow detector, and a processor which allows analysis of the information obtained from the sensor and detector to provide an indication of fetal health.

Fetal monitors for automatically and continuously monitoring the well-being of a fetus. The preferably ambulatory monitors include one or more fetal cardiac sensors for detecting the fetal heart rate. The sensors can be acoustic, electrocardiographic or bioimpedence types. Interference sensors are included for selectively sensing the principle interference components contained in the fetal cardiac sensor signals. The preferred microprocessor based signal processing system converts the sensor signals into digital format and transforms the signals from time domain into frequency domain and back into time domain after appropriate processing. Adaptive cancellation of interfering signals and other signal enhancing operations are disclosed. Analytical subsystems continuously analyze the fetal heart rate information and information from a fetal movement sensor to perform a fetal non-stress test. Subsystems for other analytical tests are also disclosed. Alarms warn the mother when fetal behavior is outside of preprogrammed acceptable limits of such analytical tests so that remedial action may be initiated. The monitoring system also preferably includes a sensor belt for properly and conveniently wearing the sensors and a control unit containing the signal processing and related components.

Carbohydrate antigenic determinants containing a glycosidically linked bridging arm are synthesized and coupled to carrier molecules to form artificial antigens, and to solid supports to form immunoadsorbents. Various artificial antigens of the blood group type are prepared and applications shown. Specific examples are given to the synthesis of the Lewis-a, Lewis-b, A, B, and H(O) blood group antigens; to the preparation of antisera to these artificial antigens, to the preparation of immunoadsorbents specific for antibodies to these antigens, and to the detection of such antigens wherever they occur.

Artificial oligosaccharide antigenic determinants

Carbohydrate antigenic determinants containing a glycosidically linked bridging arm are synthesized and coupled to carrier molecules to form artificial antigens, and to solid supports to form immunoabsorbants. These artificial antigens are used to detect antibodies to the carbohydrate haptens, and to raise antisera specific for the carbohydrate antigenic determinants. The immunoabsorbants are used to purify or remove antibodies to the carbohydrate haptens. Specific examples are given to the synthesis of the Lewis-a, Lewis-b, B, and H(O) blood group antigens; to the preparation of antisera to these artificial antigens, and to the preparation of immunoabsorbants specific for antibodies to these antigens.
