A method and apparatus for facilitating access terminal handoff between access networks is provided. The method may comprise: receiving, at a first access network (AN), an access channel message from an access terminal, wherein the access channel message includes information corresponding to a communication session between a second AN and the access terminal, wherein the communication session includes at least an active personality negotiated with the second AN, obtaining at least one personality, associated with the access terminal, previously negotiated by the first AN, determining if one of the at least one personalities is substantially similar to the active personality, and upon a determination that one of the at least one personalities is substantially similar to the active personality, transferring the communication session to the first AN with the substantially similar personality as the active personality.

Apparatus and method for personality modification during handoff

The access terminal is configured to wirelessly send to a data system a request that the data system assign an access terminal identifier (ATI) to the access terminal. The access terminal delays transmission of the request until after a user of the access terminal has employed the access terminal to request a packet data service from the data system. In some instances, the data system is an Evolution, Data Only (EV-DO) system and the access terminal identifier (ATI) is a Unicast Access Terminal Identifier (UATI) generated by the Evolution, Data Only (EV-DO) system.

Techniques for efficient storage and retrieval of Preferred Roaming Lists are disclosed. In one aspect, PRL entries are stored in two tables. One table contains records that are common to two or more PRL entries. Another table stores any information that is unique to a PRL entry, as well as an indicator of which common record is associated with it. The common record is concatenated with the unique information to generate the uncompressed PRL entry. Various other aspects of the invention are also presented. These aspects have the benefit of reducing the memory requirements for storing a PRL. In addition, time required to download the compressed PRL is reduced.

A novel and improved method and apparatus provide for controlling an operation of an access terminal while processing a signal from an access point in a communication system. Various aspects of the invention provide for an access terminal to disable a handoff process when its demodulator or decoder is operating to demodulate or decode a control message received from an access point. The operation of the access terminal is controlled in a manner that prevents terminating prematurely the demodulation and decoding process of a control signal by a handoff process. As a result, the access terminal may continue operating in a normal wake up/ sleep cycle period while conserving its battery power.

Method and apparatus for controlling operation of an access terminal in a communication system

A system and method for determining 1xEV-DO availability for a packet data call in a wireless device is presented. When the wireless device receives a request to initiate a packet data call, the device determines if it currently has access to a preferred 1xEV-DO channel. The determination can be made by consulting a 1xEV-DO availability list stored in persistent memory on the wireless device. If available, the wireless device originates the packet data call on the 1xEV-DO channel. If the device is using a CDMA system that has 1xEV-DO channels but the availability or usability of those channels are unknown, the device polls the signal strength on the 1xEV-DO channels to determine the best 1xEV-DO channel to use for the packet data call. If no 1xEV-DO channel is available or if none of the available 1xEV-DO channels are usable, then the device originates the packet data call on a CDMA channel.

Method for determining packet transmission system availability for packet data call origination during hybrid operation

The present invention employs a method for coordinating communication of protocol processes within Access Terminals in order for the Access Terminals to successfully and efficiently communicate with the protocol processes within an Access Network. The method of the present invention can be used in conjunction with the current IS-856 standard. After receiving an indication of required configuration from one or more of the answering protocol processes, the SCP issues a configuration command to all of the answering protocol processes in the AT. If the answering protocol process determines that it needs to reconfigure any of its parameters, it accepts the configuration command and notifies the SCP that it has accepted the configuration command. Alternatively, if the answering protocol process determines that it does not need to reconfigure any of its parameters, it rejects the configuration command and notifies the SCP that it has rejected its configuration command. Communication between the Access Terminal and the Access Network then resumes.

Implementing and coordinating configuration of protocol processes

Techniques for avoiding handoff to a channel impaired due to frequency dependent fading, while minimizing idle mode signaling are disclosed. In one aspect, an access terminal determines the assigned channel on an access point and caches the channel. In another aspect, the access terminal replaces a default channel associated with an access point in a cache with the assigned channel. In yet another aspect, the access terminal uses the cached channel associated with an access point when measuring channel quality of neighbor access points for use in handoff determination. In yet another aspect, the access terminal hands off to the cached channel of a neighbor access point during handoff. Various other aspects are also presented. These aspects have the benefit of factoring in frequency dependent channel characteristics when making handoff decisions, thus avoiding handoff to an access point where the assigned channel may be impaired.

Idle handoff with neighbor list channel replacement

The wireless communication device receives a neighbor list message from a first base station. The neighbor list message includes a respective base station configuration parameter for each of a plurality of base stations. In response to the neighbor list message, the wireless communication device constructs a neighbor list table, including one record for each of the plurality of base stations, with each record including their respective base station configuration parameter. After handing off to a second base station, the wireless communication device replaces the record for the second base station with a corresponding record for the first base station. The wireless communication device then may change the respective base station configuration parameter for at least one of the records of the plurality of base stations in the neighbor list table to match the base station configuration parameter of the second base station.
