In one exemplary embodiment of an exhaust system, the system includes an exhaust manifold in fluid communication with an internal combustion engine and a forced induction device in fluid communication with the exhaust manifold, the forced induction device including a housing. The system further includes a flow control device to control fluid communication between the forced induction device and a catalyst substrate and to control fluid communication between the exhaust manifold and the catalyst substrate.

Forced induction and exhaust system

A camshaft assembly may include a monolithic camshaft body, a journal member and a thrust ring. The monolithic camshaft body may define lobes and journal regions along an axial extent thereof. The journal member may be separate from and fixed to an axial end of the camshaft body adjacent an end lobe of the camshaft body. The thrust ring may be axially secured to the camshaft assembly at the axial end of the camshaft body.

Multipiece camshaft assembly

An engine cylinder head has an exhaust manifold cast in the cylinder head. A turbocharger with a turbine body is adapted to mount directly to an exhaust outlet mounting face of the exhaust manifold. A dual level water jacket within the cylinder head has separate coolant feeds for upper and lower cooling jackets. The cooling jackets extend above and below the exhaust outlet and are connected inward of the exhaust mounting face to reduce metal temperatures of the mounting face below those of the turbocharger exhaust inlet flange. Separate cores for the upper and lower jackets are connected at coolant inlet and outlet locations at opposite ends. Intermediate core print connectors form controlled flow passages between the upper and lower jackets and exhaust ports in the cylinder head and integrated manifold. The improved cooling in these areas lowers operating temperatures in the cylinder head and obviates the need for a separate exhaust manifold.

Turbocharged engine cylinder head internal cooling

Provided is a cylinder head including a head casting defining a plurality of exhaust ports. A tuned exhaust manifold is internally defined by the head casting. The tuned exhaust manifold includes a plurality of exhaust runners in communication with the plurality of exhaust ports and a collector volume in communication with the plurality of exhaust runners. Each of the plurality of exhaust ports and each of the plurality of exhaust runners are substantially oriented or directed toward the collector volume. Additionally, the head casting defines a main cooling jacket operable to cool the head casting. The head casting also defines an upper and lower cooling jacket disposed in heat exchange relation to the tuned exhaust manifold. The cylinder head casting may include integral spark plug tubes and cam drive case. Additionally, the cooling jackets may have a series coolant flow pattern or a parallel coolant flow pattern.
