An electrically operated aerosol-generating system is provided, including: a housing having a front housing portion and a rear housing portion, the front housing portion including a front end portion having a cavity configured to receive an aerosol-generating article including a taggant having a spectroscopic signature; and a detector configured to detect a presence of the aerosol-generating article in the cavity and to identify aerosol-generating articles that may be usable with the system, the detector being able to determine the spectroscopic signature of the taggant.

Aerosol-generating article and electrically operated system incorporating a taggant

An electrically operated aerosol-generating system is provided, including: an aerosol-generating article including at least one component incorporating a taggant within a material of the component, the taggant including an identifiable spectroscopic signature; a cavity configured to at least partially receive the aerosol-generating article; at least one heating element; a power supply configured to supply power to the at least one heating element; electrical hardware connected to the power supply and the at least one heating element; and a detector configured to detect a presence of the aerosol-generating article in the cavity and to distinguish the aerosol-generating article from other articles configured for use with the aerosol-generating system, based on the taggant incorporated within the material of the aerosol-generating article, in which the electrical hardware is configured to establish a heating protocol for the heating element based on the particular aerosol-generating article distinguished by the detector.

A ground plane is provided, including: a monolithic elongated conductive member, a first portion of the monolithic elongated conductive member forming a cavity configured to receive a power supply, a plurality of second portions of the monolithic elongated conductive member respectively forming resilient elements extending over the cavity and configured to retain the power supply within the cavity, and a plurality of third portions of the monolithic elongated conductive member respectively forming parallel pins configured to receive an electronic circuit board. Monolithic plane with electrical contacts and methods for manufacturing the same

A method of controlling an aerosol-generating system, and the associated system, are provided. The system includes an aerosol-generating article and an aerosol-generating device having a detector configured to detect the presence of the article and to distinguish the article from other articles configured for use with the system, based on a spectroscopic signature of a taggant incorporated within a material of the article. The method includes detecting the presence of the article; determining whether the article includes a taggant; comparing the spectroscopic signature of the detected taggant with a look-up table of taggant spectroscopic signatures corresponding to articles configured for use with the system; preventing activation of the device, including preventing the supply of power to a heating element unless the detected taggant spectroscopic signature corresponds to an article configured for use with the system; and activating the device if the detected signature corresponds to the article.

There is provided a method and system for controlling heating in an aerosol-generating system including a heater, the method including comparing a measured voltage across the heater, indicative of the temperature of the heater, with a target value; if the measured voltage across the heater exceeds the target value by greater than or equal to a first amount, then preventing a supply of power to the heater for a first time period; and if the measured voltage across the heater exceeds the target value, but by less than the first amount, then preventing the supply of power to the heater for a second time period, shorter than the first time period.

Device and method for controlling an electrical heater to limit temperature according to desired temperature profile over time

A method of controlling an electric heater in an electrically heated smoking system is provided, including providing electrical power to the heater in pulses such that during active periods power is supplied to the heater and during inactive periods power is not supplied to the heater; charging a capacitor in an RC circuit during the inactive periods and allowing the capacitor to discharge during the active periods; and monitoring a discharge voltage of the capacitor and if the discharge voltage of the capacitor drops below a threshold voltage level, then stopping further supply of electrical power to the heater.

Switch failure monitoring in an electrically heated smoking system

There is provided a method and system for controlling heating in an aerosol-generating system including a heater, the method including comparing a measured parameter, indicative of the temperature of the heater, with a target value for the measured parameter; preventing a supply of power to the heater for a first time period if the measured parameter exceeds the target value by greater than or equal to a first amount; and preventing the supply of power to the heater for a second time period, shorter than the first time period, if the measured parameter exceeds the target value by less than the first amount.

There is provided a system for transmitting power and data from a host device to a receiver device over an electrical connection, including a host device configured to transmit power and data through an output, and configured to transmit the power through the output at different times to the data; a receiver device having an input connectable to the output of the host device, the receiver device including a power receiving circuit, a data receiving circuit, and a switch element configured to connect the input to the power receiving circuit or the data receiving circuit dependent on a voltage of a signal received from the input. There is also provided a receiver device for receiving power and data from the host device.

Power and data transmission system and method

A method of charging a second battery in an electronic smoking device from a first battery in a charging device is provided, including: comparing an output voltage of the first battery with a threshold voltage; and when the output voltage is equal to or greater than the threshold voltage, charging the second battery using a first current; and when the output voltage is less than the threshold voltage, reducing the first current until the output voltage is equal to or greater than a second threshold voltage. A charging device is also provided, including control circuitry configured to control charging of the secondary battery.

Adaptive battery charging method and system

An electrically operated aerosol generating device is provided, including an electrical power supply; an electronic circuit board; an electrical heating element configured to receive power from the electrical power supply via the electronic circuit board; and a ground plane comprising an elongate conductive member configured to electrically couple the power supply to the electronic circuit board and the electrical heating element, and to structurally retain the power supply and plurality of components of the electrically operated aerosol generation device. There is also provided a ground plane, and a single laminar blank configured to form the ground plane. A method of assembling an electrically operated aerosol generating device is also provided.

A rechargeable handheld electrically operated smoking device is provided, including a rechargeable power source; a first charging contact connected to the power source by a MOSFET voltage-controlled switch having a source, drain, and gate terminals; an operational amplifier including a non-inverting input connected to the source terminal, an inverting input connected to the drain terminal, and an output connected to the gate terminal; and a second charging contact connected to the power source, the switch being configured to prevent current flow between the first charging contact and the power source through the switch when a voltage difference therebetween is lower than a first threshold voltage, the device being configured to amplify a voltage difference between the source and drain terminals and apply it to the gate terminal, closed loop feedback is applied to the inverting input, and a biasing resistor is connected between the inverting input and electrical ground.
