A vehicle occupant restraint system () includes a center airbag () which, in an inflated state, extends between two vehicle seats () positioned next to each other and which has an inflatable torso gas bag () and an inflatable head gas bag () connected to the torso gas bag (). The torso gas bag () comprises a laterally projecting, as seen in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle (L), inflatable protrusion () which is designed and arranged to abut, in the completely inflated state of the center airbag (), against a vehicle structure () between the vehicle seats () and to support the center airbag () against a lateral force (F).

A side airbag of a vehicle occupant restraint system () which is provided to be mounted on a vehicle seat () comprises an inflatable head gas cushion () and an inflatable torso gas cushion () connected to the head gas cushion () both of which form separate inflatable compartments of the side airbag (). The head gas cushion () and the torso gas cushion () are formed by separate inflatable cushions which are fastened to each other in a connecting section (). Diffuser

A seat back has a rigid seat back frame and a cover. A seat back center part extends substantially perpendicular to the sitting direction. Two seat back frame sides laterally delimit the seat back and are transformed into the seat back center part. An airbag module accommodated in the cover of one of the seat back frame sides is mounted to the seat back frame. In the area of the seat back frame side, the seat back frame has a contact surface adjacent to a spirally folded airbag and extending substantially obliquely forward away from the seat back center part. The contact surface includes an angle (&#x3b1;) of 10&#xb0;&#x2266;&#x3b1;&#x2266;45&#xb0; with the sitting direction. The airbag extends substantially obliquely forward away from the center part and is wound spirally inwardly in a sense of rotation directed away from the center part.

An air bag module () comprises an air bag (), an inflator () and a gas distributing member () for distributing the gas escaping from the inflator () into different directions of flow. The gas distributing member () is configured so that it is deformed by the pressure exerted by the escaping gas such that thereby the distribution of the gas to the different directions of flow is influenced.

A side impact restraint device for protection of an occupant (a;b), sitting on a vehicle seat () in a motor vehicle, includes a gas bag (). The gas bag () unfolds between a lateral structure () of the vehicle and the occupant (a;b). A seat-integrated vehicle occupant restraint system includes a gas bag module () having a gas bag (), and a cover () for the module. The cover has at least one predefined outlet opening (), provided for an emerging of the gas bag (). A seat covering () has edge sections () extending close to the outlet opening (). A carrier part () is provided which is fixed in position in a rest of said seat. Fastened to said carrier part near the outlet opening () are the edge sections () of the seat covering (). The carrier part keeps the outlet opening () closed when the gas bag () is folded. The carrier part () and the seat covering () are decoupled relative to the gas bag module () and are movable relative to the gas bag module (). The invention further relates to a vehicle seat equipped with such a restraint system.

A vehicle seat comprises a back rest and a gas bag module integrated into said back rest extending in an upward direction to have an upward extent. The gas bag module includes a gas bag and a gas generator. When installed, the gas bag is arranged within the back rest so as to be extended in the upward direction of the back rest and one of folded and rolled up transversely to the upward direction. A height of said gas bag when inflated corresponds substantially to said upward extent of the back rest.

A vehicle seat has an upper body side protection device that is integrated in the back rest. The protection device comprises a gas bag which has an elongated, oval chamber via which, in the case of an intrusion, the force is introduced into the occupant principally in the region of the hip and the shoulder, in order to displace him in the direction towards the center of the vehicle.

The invention relates to gas bag restraint system for use in motor vehicles, the system comprising a gas bag, a cover for the gas bag, a guiding sheet metal and a deployment opening for the gas bag. Upon deployment of the gas bag the cover is swiveled outwards to uncover the deployment opening. A guiding sheet metal is provided which forms at least part of the cover and is bent during swiveling. The guiding sheet metal exerts, in a position completely swiveled, a resistance to the gas bag when deploying so as to predetermine a deployment direction of the gas bag.
