A method for controlling a modular multilevel power converter which has at least one phase module branch with a series circuit of modules. Each of the modules has an energy storage device and a power semiconductor circuit with electronic switching elements. A duty cycle of the phase module branch is ascertained, wherein the duty cycle describes the ratio between the voltage which is being output by the phase module branch and the voltage which can be maximally output by the phase module branch. The maximum value of the duty cycle during a preselected time period is ascertained, and the maximum value of the duty cycle is controlled to a target value for the maximum value of the duty cycle by a controller.

Controlling a multilevel power converter

A method controls a power converter in which a target value of a control parameter is limited by at least one limiting value. The method is characterized in that the at least one limiting value is determined dynamically over time as a function of a power converter temperature. A power converter system having a control device is provided and configured to carry out the method.

A converter has a plurality of partial converters, each partial converter having three-phase converter-side supply connections for parallel connection to the same electrical three-phase supply system and three-phase converter-side output connections with a star point for making contact with a star point of a three-phase output system. The converter-side output connections of the three-phase partial converters are connected in parallel. The partial converters each have a converter module for each partial converter-side three-phase supply connection, and the converter modules each have two or more submodules having their outputs connected in series, and a transformer.

A method detects a working voltage collapse by use of an electric component, in which the exceeding of a critical characteristic of the working voltage is monitored and an excess is detected as a collapse. Accordingly, in order to recognize the collapse breakdown in a simple trouble-free manner, a model voltage generated by a model circuit is used as the critical characteristic.

A sub-module of a modular braking unit that is connected to a DC transmission network. Each sub-module has an inverse diode, and a storage capacitor connected in parallel with the inverse diode via a free-wheeling diode. An energy-consuming switching unit is connected to the storage capacitor. In order to provide a sub-module of this type such that the braking unit can function with relatively low losses in the stand-by and idle state, the sub-module is provided with an actively switchable semiconductor bypass path in parallel with the inverse diode. A braking unit has a plurality of series-connected sub-modules and we disclose a method for operating a braking unit of this type.
