A computer-implemented method for enabling a child to learn to read, including maintaining a data store with information that characterizes the reading capabilities of children, receiving a stream of sensor data from one or more input devices, the sensor data representing the speech of a person speaking, the person being either an adult or a child, or a sequence of scenes, identifying a meaningful utterance or a meaningful scene from the stream of sensor data, representing the meaningful utterance or meaningful scene in written text using words and grammar appropriate to the reading level of the child, based on information stored in the data store, providing the output text to a display device for presentation to the child, and receiving user feedback.

Method and system for acquisition of literacy

Systems and methods for treating autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and related dysfunctions are disclosed. A method in accordance with a particular embodiment includes determining that a patient suffers from an autistic disorder and, based at least in part on the determination, selecting a cortical signal delivery site. The method can further include implanting an electrode within the patient's skull and external to a cortical surface of the patient's brain, and treating the autistic disorder by applying electrical signals to the implanted electrode in conjunction administering an adjunctive therapy to the patient.

Systems and methods for treating autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and related dysfunctions

A method of modeling speech distinctions within computer-animated talking heads that utilize the manipulation of speech production articulators for selected speech segments. Graphical representations of voice characteristics and speech production characteristics are generated in response to said speech segment. By way of example, breath images are generated such as particle-cloud images, and particle-stream images to represent the voiced characteristics such as the presence of stops and fricatives, respectively. The coloring on exterior portions of the talking head is displayed in response to selected voice characteristics such as nasality. The external physiology of the talking head is modulated, such as by changing the width and movement of the nose, the position of the eyebrows, and movement of the throat in response to the voiced speech characteristics such as pitch, nasality, and voicebox vibration, respectively. The invention also describes modeling a talking head on the facial image of a particular individual.

Visual display methods for in computer-animated speech production models

An analog timepiece face that contains a smaller hour portion (A) concentrically positioned within a larger minute portion (B). The hour portion has a hour hand (C) and hour division marks (F) marking each interval of time on the peripheral hour track (E). The minute portion has a minute hand (G) and minute division marks (J) marking each interval of time on the peripheral minute track (I). Hour numerals (D) and minute numerals (H) are provided on the respective hour and minute tracks of the timepiece. Spatial location, size, type font, and color are used to key the components of one portion together and to keep the hour and minute portions distinct from one another. The hour and minute hand are made to differ in spatial location, size, and color. The hour numerals and the minute numerals are made to differ in spatial location, size, and color. In addition, correlated visible cues of spatial location, size, and color are used to specify the correspondence between the hour hand and the hour numerals and the minute hand and the minute numerals. the proposed timepiece can also include a digital portion (M) placed near the center. The correspondence between the analog and the digital representations of time is highlighted by making the size, font, or color of the digital numbers the same as the size, font, or color of the corresponding numbers on the analog clock. In addition, an analog timepiece with a clockface with at least one elongated hand that is made translucent to preclude the occlusion of numerals on the clockface.
