A pixel for creating an optical phase change includes a transparent electrical insulator, a first electrical conductor disposed on the transparent electrical insulator, the first electrical conductor comprising an antenna component and a connector component, an electrical insulator disposed on the first electrical conductor, a transparent semiconductor disposed on the electrical insulator, and a second electrical conductor disposed on the transparent semiconductor. The transparent semiconductor is sufficiently thick to prevent plasmonic resonance from occurring at an interface between the transparent semiconductor and the second electrical conductor.

Apparatus for plasmonic nanoantenna optical beam phase-shifter and steerer

There is provided an optical power distribution system including an input optical fiber receiving light having an optical power. The optical power distribution system further includes an optical power distribution splitter optically coupled to the input optical fiber, the optical power distribution splitter including an all-dielectric optical waveguide, the optical power distribution splitter configured to divide the optical power into two or more portions. The optical power distribution system further includes an optical device optically coupled to optical power distribution splitter, the optical device including an optical waveguide having a semiconductor layer, the optical device receiving a first portion of the optical power.

An aspect of the disclosure provides for an optical-phased array (OPA) comprising a star coupler coupled to a plurality of grating couplers, wherein the star coupler comprises multiple inputs and multiple outputs. In some embodiments, each output of the star coupler is coupled to a grating coupler of the plurality of grating couplers. In some embodiments, the star coupler is coupled to the plurality of grating couplers by a plurality of optical delay lines. In some embodiments each output of the star coupler is coupled to a grating coupler of the plurality of grating couplers via an optical delay line of the plurality of optical delay lines. In some embodiments, the OPA further includes an optical switch coupled to the multiple inputs of the star coupler, and at least one tunable laser. Another aspect of the disclosure provides a method for steering light using the OPA.

Optical-phased array beam-steerer

An optical apparatus comprises: a light source configured to emit light composed of a sequence of shots; and a steering device optically coupled to the light source and configured to steer the shots emitted by the light source in accordance with a predefined scan pattern such that at least one intermediate shot is emitted by the light source between a first shot directed by the steering device within an aperture defined by an eye safety regulation and a subsequent, second shot directed by the steering device within the same aperture, each intermediate shot being directed by the steering device outside the aperture.

Apparatus and method for scanning and ranging with eye-safe pattern

Aspects of the disclosure provide a system and method used for time-of-flight lidar applications. Such systems and methods include a laser and pulse clipper which produces a shuttering effect to reduce the instantaneous output power from the pulse clipper. Accordingly the output from the pulse clipper is more suitable for time-of-flight lidar applications than that initially produced by the laser. This can allow for lasers which may otherwise exceed eye safety limits to be used for time-of-flight lidar applications without exceeding the eye safety limits.

A method and apparatus is provided for control of plural optical phase shifters in an optical device, such as a Mach-Zehnder Interferometer switch. Drive signal magnitude is set using a level setting input and is used for operating both phase shifters, which may have similar characteristics due to co-location and co-manufacture. A device state control signal selects which of the phase shifters receives the drive signal. One or more switches may be used to route the drive signal to the selected phase shifter. Separate level control circuits and state control circuits operating at different speeds may be employed. When the phase shifters are asymmetrically conducting (e.g. carrier injection) phase shifters, a bi-polar drive circuit can be employed. In this case, the phase shifters can be connected in reverse-parallel, and the drive signal polarity can be switchably reversed in order to drive a selected one of the phase shifters.

Method and apparatus for control of optical phase shifters in an optical device

A hybrid electronic optical chip has a first photonic element with which a first diode is associated, a second photonic element with which a second diode is associated and a common electrical driver connected to the first and second diodes by a common electrical connection with opposite polarity. The electrical driver generates a common electrical drive signal divided in time into first and second drive signal components for independently driving the first and second photonic elements through the common electrical connection.

There is provided methods and apparatuses for transferring photonic cells or frames between a photonic switch and an electronic switch enabling a scalable data center cloud system with photonic functions transparently embedded into an electronic chassis. In various embodiments, photonic interface functions may be transparently embedded into existing switch chips (or switch cards) without changes in the line cards. The embedded photonic interface functions may provide the switch cards with the ability to interface with both existing line cards and photonic switches. In order to embed photonic interface functions without changes on the existing line cards, embodiments use two-tier buffering with a pause signalling or pause messaging scheme for managing the two-tier buffer memories.

Methods and apparatuses for transparent embedding of photonic switching into electronic chassis for scaling data center cloud system

Photonic elements driven by common electrical driver

A coherent LIDAR method and apparatus are provided, in which two optical signals having a first frequency difference are reflected by an object. A difference in frequency between the corresponding received and reflected signals is determined. The frequency difference between the reflected signals differs from the first frequency difference due to Doppler effects. The object velocity is determined based on a comparison between the first frequency difference and the frequency difference in the reflected signals. The emitted signals can be produced by modulating a common light source. The reflected signals are inherently mixed at the receiver and further processed. Distance to the object can be determined by pulsing the emitted signals and measuring a time of flight by detecting corresponding pulse edges in the reflected signals, or by using phase sweeping. The emitter can be implemented using an optical phased array.

Coherent LIDAR method and apparatus

A photonic integrated circuit is provided that is adapted to compensate for an unintentional manufactured refractive index profile, such as a gradient, that arises due to manufacturing variance. The photonic integrated circuit including at least a thermal source and a spaced thermal sink to induce a thermal gradient in the photonic integrated circuit between the thermal source and the spaced thermal sink, the thermal gradient imparts an opposing thermal refractive index profile to correct for the manufactured refractive index profile. In some embodiments the photonic integrated circuit may be constructed with features that have an intentional structured refractive index profile that ensures any unintentional manufactured refractive index profile is correctable by the opposing thermal refractive index profile induced by the thermal source.

Apparatus and methods for accommodating manufacturing variance in optical photonic integrated circuits

A LIDAR or other optical beamsteering apparatus includes an optical switch having a first port and a plurality of second ports. The switch is operated to establish an optical path between the first port and one of the second ports. The first port is connected to a light source or a light detector. Different second ports are connected to different surface/edge couplers. Each of the surface/edge couplers couples light from or to the apparatus in a different respective direction. The surface/edge couplers can be grating couplers. The direction of light coupling is configured due to the orientation of the surface/edge coupler and its grating period, where applicable. Surface/edge couplers can be arranged in a circular or concentric ring pattern. Grating couplers can be elongated.

Optical scanner with optically switched paths to multiple surface or edge couplers

An assembly with optical gain assisted optical transposer is provided. The optical transposer which optically couples a fibre array unit and a photonic integrated circuit. The optical transposer includes one or more optical gain elements which are configured to provide optical compensation, for example optical gain to mitigate optical losses associated with multistage photonic integrated devices. According to some embodiments, the optical gain element is a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). According to some embodiments the photonic integrated circuit is a SiPh PIC.

Optical transposer assembly

An aspect of the disclosure provides a system for transmitting a radio frequency (RF) signal from a source to a destination. Such a system includes an RF signal source configured to produce an RF signal at a transmission frequency. The system further includes an optical transmission path for optically transmitting the RF signal towards the destination. The system also includes a feedback path for transmitting a feedback signal received proximate the destination towards the RF signal source. The feedback path includes a frequency shifter for shifting the frequency of the feedback signal to a feedback frequency different than the transmission frequency.

Method and system for frequency shifted feedback path

A polarization insensitive optical phased array is provided, for LIDAR or other purposes. A polarization rotator splitter or two-dimensional grating coupler provides two components of co-polarized (e.g. TE-polarized) light. Each component can be routed to a separate optical phased array (OPA) component, and light output of one of the OPA components is rotated in polarization by use of a half wave plate. A polarization controller can receive and control the two components of co-polarized light and then passes the controlled light to the two OPA components. A single OPA component can also be used along with a controller which combines the two components of co-polarized light into a single output, passed to the single OPA component.
