A personalized content overlay is generated and sent for display to a subscriber. The content overlay may be generated in response to a request by the subscriber, such as a request to watch a program. The content overlay can include personalized information tailored to the subscriber based on subscriber information. The content overlay can also include information obtained from a third party, such as an advertiser, that has a preexisting relationship with the subscriber. The content overlay can include one or more triggers that, when activated by the subscriber, enable interactivity between the subscriber and a third party.

Content overlays in on-demand streaming applications

A network planning tool and method for configuring a connection-oriented packet network over a WDM optical network without an optical control layer, such as a SONET/SDH layer. The optical network includes a plurality of optical fibers interconnected through nodes and the connection-oriented packet network, such an Ethernet network, MPLS network, or pseudowire network, includes two or more terminal devices. The method and tool function by building an association between the components of the physical layer, such as the optical fiber, and their geographic location or path. The connection-oriented packet network is configured by building multi-link trunks (MLTs) between terminal devices, where the MLTs are built by aggregating lightpaths that traverse distinctive geographic paths. The MLTs are planned and configured through aggregating lightpaths that traverse incongruent sets of photonic elements. A predetermined target for resiliency to physical failure events may determine the degree of congruence allowed between the sets of photonic elements associated with lightpaths in the same MLT.

Method and system for configuring a connection-oriented packet network over a wavelength division multiplexed optical network

The present invention allows Internet Protocol television (IPTV) services to be provided to different types of subscriber devices over different types of networks via a multimedia subsystem, such as an IP multimedia subsystem. A given subscriber may have one subscription supporting IPTV services to different types of subscriber devices. Each of the subscriber devices may register with a given IPTV application server, which will interact with the various subscriber devices using a common session control protocol, such as the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). The IPTV sessions may support delivery of various types of streaming content, such as audio or video content, for broadcast or on-demand services. Different IPTV sessions are used to support broadcast and on-demand services. However, within a given broadcast or on-demand IPTV session, channels may be changed or the streaming media may be controlled within the respective IPTV sessions.

Multimedia subsystem control for internet protocol based television services

Subscribers request programs from a network based content server and view the requested programs via their customer equipment. The content server receives various programs and breaks the program content for each program into a sequence of program segments, which are logically linked by program association indicia. The content server also receives advertisements and stores the advertisements as advertising segments, which generally contain at least one complete advertisement, but the invention is not limited thereto. Upon receiving a program request from a subscriber, the content server will identify advertising segments to provide along with the program segments for the requested program, and where to place the advertising segments among the program segments. Next, the content server will generate composite association indicia identifying the sequence of program and advertising segments, and effect delivery of the program and advertising segments to the subscriber in the sequence defined by the composite association indicia.

Dynamic advertising control

To communicate between terminal devices, a time period of overlap between a first time slot of first advertisement content provided to a first terminal device and a second time slot of second advertisement content provided to a second terminal device is determined. An indication is sent for establishment of a call session between the first terminal device and second terminal device during the time period of overlap.

Establishing a call session during an advertisement time period

A technique for photonic switching is disclosed. In one particular exemplary embodiment, the technique may be realized as a method for photonic switching. The method may comprise receiving at least one optical signal at a photonic line card, wherein the at least one optical signal comprises one or more wavelength channels and the photonic line card comprises at least one integrated optical switch. The method may also comprise routing at least one of the one or more wavelength channels through the at least one integrated optical switch to a photonic bus, wherein the photonic bus comprises a plurality of optical paths and each of the plurality of optical paths is capable of carrying multiple wavelength channels.

Technique for photonic switching

A wide-coverage, high-capacity, switching network is modeled after a classical space-time-space switch. In the switching network, each of the space stages comprises geographically distributed optical space switches and the time stage comprises a plurality of geographically distributed high-capacity electronic switching nodes. User-access concentrators, each supporting numerous users, access the network through ports of the distributed optical space switches. A user-access concentrator is a simple device which need only have a single access channel to access the network, although two or more access channels may be used. Such a user-access concentrator can communicate with a large number of other user-access concentrators by time-multiplexing the access channel.

Distributed space-time-space switch

A method and a protection switching arrangement for protection switching of any one of a plurality of optical signals of a multi-wavelength optical signal from the failure of an optical component is provided. The multi-wavelength optical signal which contains the optical signals is itself rerouted by the use of wavelength agnostic rerouting elements, after which a tunable optical filter is used to obtain from the multi-wavelength optical signal the particular optical signal which would have been affected by the failure. In embodiments of the invention where the failed component is a switching fabric, the multi-wavelength optical signal is rerouted away from the failed switching fabric through a redundant switching fabric after which the particular optical signal is obtained with use of the tunable optical filter.

Protection architecture for photonic switch using tunable optical filter

A method and apparatus for transmitting and receiving power over optical fiber is disclosed. In particular, a power over fiber system in which an optical network transmits electrical power via an optical signal and is also transmits data within the optical network as well. The optical signals include a high frequency data portion that includes the data to be transmitted, and either a constant or low frequency power signal portion. The optical signal is received and converted into an electrical signal by a photodetector/photodiode that is electrically filtered to separate the data signal from the power signal. The data signal is then processed using known techniques. The power signal can be conditioned and/or regulated, if necessary, and provided either directly to a terminal piece of equipment to provide all the required power thereto, or may be combined with locally provided power to contribute at least a portion of the power required by the equipment. The terminal piece of equipment may be a wireless access point.

Method and apparatus for transmitting and receiving power over optical fiber

The present invention relates to a system for testing the connection paths of a switch fabric by using a spontaneously emitted signal as a test signal. The system includes at least one first module and at least one second module, wherein each one of the second modules is associated to one of the first modules through a connection path in the switch fabric. Each of the first modules is capable of obtaining a respective first measurement of a characteristic of the spontaneously emitted signal supplied to the switch fabric, and each of the second modules is capable of obtaining a respective second measurement of the characteristic of the spontaneously emitted signal. The system further includes a processing module in communication with each of the first and second modules for determining a feature of the optical component based on the first and second measurements.

Method and apparatus for testing an optical component

A depopulated MEMs array based protection switch is provided. The protection switch includes a depopulated protection array for rerouting optical signals using fewer switching elements than a fully populated array, and in some implementations an integrated test array for performing a self-test in service mode, and for testing failed optical components.

Depopulated switchable micro electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) based module for photonic fabric verification and protection

Method and apparatus for stabilizing an optical carrier frequency of a generated carrier signal with respect to a target carrier frequency. The apparatus includes a multi-channel optical filter for filtering the generated carrier signal, thereby to provide a first filtered optical signal and a second filtered optical signal, each filtered optical signal including the portion of the generated carrier signal contained in a pass band surrounding a respective channel center frequency. The apparatus also includes a detection unit for determining an indication of a characteristic of the target carrier frequency in the first and second filtered optical signals, as well as a control unit for adjusting the optical carrier frequency of the generated carrier signal as a function of the difference in the indication of the characteristic of the target carrier frequency in the first and second filtered optical signals.
