Implantable mechanical system for assisting blood circulation using a blood circulation pump and wherein the system, being actuated by the power produced by the linear contraction of the skeletal muscle, comprises for its two-phase application: a combined prosthesis defining the bio-mechanical coupling between the skeletal muscle and the implantable mechanical system; a muscle action force multiplier transmitting force through a lever system driving compression plates of the blood chamber formed into the pump; the biomechanical coupling, the force multiplier and the lever system forming a functional unit interconnected by means of lead wires for transmiting movement; the system further comprising a device for measuring force and the displacement of the skeletal muscle driving the pump, during the electro-stimulation period through the system.

Implantable mechanical system for assisting blood circulation

A self-supporting cardiac valve bioprosthesis of the type fixable to the patient's aortic ring for replacing an explanted valve. The bioprosthesis consists of a tubular body having a flow passageway therethrough and having a proximal and a distal end. A multi-valve obturator is located adjacent the proximal end of the tubular body for closing the flow passageway. Each valve of the multi-valve obturator is capable of rotating about a fulcrum adjacent an outer circumference of the flow passageway. A suture ring is provided having a continuous annular cord forming the fulcrum of each valve of the multi-valve obturator which cord is directly fixable to a patient's aortic ring. A textile coating compatible with the human body coats the outer surface of the tubular body and the continuous annular cord.

Stentless bioprosthetic cardiac valve

A vaulted diaphragm for providing occlusion in a descending thoracic aorta, includes a flexible and substantially circular element, and a plurality of resilient ribs having inner and outer ends supporting the circular element. The inner ends of the ribs are joined together at a hub with the ribs extending radially outwardly therefrom. The ribs are generally positioned on and attached to the circular element with the outer ends of the ribs having protrusions projecting radially beyond the circular element. The ribs have a resilient expansion tendency, such that the diaphragm may be held in a biased folded position during installation and sprung open into a normally vaulted shape upon installation in the aorta, whereby the protrusions are urged radially outwardly by the resilient expansion tendency of the ribs to engage the aorta and hold the diaphragm in position. A surgical procedure for treating an aneurysm in a patient's descending thoracic aorta, includes the step of installing an artificial aorta by-pass connecting the patient's ascending natural aorta with the patient's abdominal aorta end. A temporary graft is installed onto the by-pass and a catheter having a capsule end holding a diaphragm is advanced through the graft. The diaphragm is positioned into a selected site in the aorta, and then released by ejecting it from the capsule and the catheter is withdrawn, with the diaphragm remaining within the aorta to provide an occlusion therein.

Diaphragm and method for occlusion of the descending thoracic aorta

A mechanical-type, bivalve cardiac valvular prosthesis including a support ring defining a central opening passing therethrough and a pair of relatively rigid leaflets, each having a diametrical straight edge and a curved edge, disposed generally within the central opening. The pair of leaflets are pivotably supported on the support ring to permit the leaflets to move between an open position, in which the leaflets are disposed generally parallel to the axis of the support ring so that said central opening remains substantially cleared, and a closed position, in which the opening is substantially blocked by the leaflets. The leaflets are each pivotably supported by a pair of pivot supports rigidly joined at one end to the inner surface of the support ring and each having an opposite, generally hook-shaped, free end on which the leaflet associated therewith is mounted in a free floating manner so that the leaflets are pivotable about a virtual axis parallel to the diametrical straight edges thereof and passing through the zone of the center of curvature of the hook-shaped ends of the pivot supports.

Cardiac valvular prosthesis

A frame support for a cardiac tissue valve is provided of the type including a hollow, substantially cylindrical body composed of a semi-flexible structure of a material such as polypropylene, covered by a medical grade fabric. The frame support defines two fully opposite ends or entrances, to the edge of which are sewed the aortic ring and the remaining portions of the resected sinuses of Valsalva including the commissural areas of the aortic wall of an animal valve, such as a porcine valve. The frame further includes an outer-widening or suture ring which defines a continuous ridge of the same fabric material. The frame has a wavy or scalloped proximal end and a distal end; the proximal end having a number of cusps corresponding to the number of commissures of the valve supported thereby. The maximum height of the cusps or crests of the wavy edge of the proximal end is in the range of a sixth of the maximum distance between both ends of the support frame; the distal end has supporting arms alternately spaced from each other by valleys (depths), the magnitude of which is three times the length of the mentioned cusps of the proximal end. The outer-widening or suture ring has a wavy conformation that follows the contour of the supporting arms and the valleys of the distal end. The width of the suture ring, measured parallel to the frame, from its distal point in the outer surface of the supporting arm to the depth of the valleys (FIG. 2-'h'), is of a magnitude similar to half the distance of the total height of the support frame.

Frame support for cardiac tissue valves

A prosthetic device which includes a frame for mounting a gluteraldehyde-fixed porcine aortic valve and includes a sewing ring which surrounds the frame. The frame is provided with a proximal end and a distal end which extends beyond the ring, and the entire unit is covered with medical grade fabric.
