The present invention relates to a novel process for the production of a water soluble polymer dispersion from vinylamide monomers, and, more particularly, polymers formed from N-vinylformamide monomers.

The invention is a water-soluble N,N-diallyl-N-alkyl-N-(sulfoalkyl) ammonium betaine containing copolymer, wherein said copolymer is formed from the polymerization of an N,N-diallyl-N-alkyl-N-(sulfoalkyl) ammonium betaine of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R is selected from the group consisting of alkyl and aryl groups, and R.sub.1 is selected from the group consisting of alkyl groups, aryl groups, and alkylaryl groups, and an anionic monomer. The invention is also a method of inhibiting the precipitation and deposition of scale on metal surfaces in contact with industrial cooling waters comprising the addition of an effective, scale-inhibiting amount of a water-soluble N,N-diallyl-N-alkyl-N-(sulfoalkyl) ammonium betaine containing copolymer, wherein said copolymer is formed from the polymerization of a betaine of the formula: ##STR2## wherein R is selected from the group consisting of alkyl and aryl groups, and R.sub.1 is selected from the group consisting of alkyl groups, aryl groups, and alkylaryl groups, and an anionic monomer. A preferred polymer is a water-soluble copolymer of N,N-diallyl-N-methyl-N-(2-sulfoethyl) ammonium betaine and acrylic acid.

It comprises treating these waste waters with a vinylamine polymer including from about 1 to about 100 mole percent vinylamine and from about 1 to about 99 mole percent of at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of amidine vinylformamide, vinyl alcohol, vinyl acetate, vinyl pyrrolidinone and the esters, amides, nitriles and salts of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid.

The invention comprises a process for removing true and apparent color from pulp and paper waste waters. It comprises treating these waste waters with a coagulant and vinylamine polymer. The coagulant is selected from the group consisting of epichlorohydrin-dimethylamine, guanidine-formaldehyde condensation polymers, cyanoguanidine-formaldehyde condensation polymers, urea-formaldehyde condensation polymers, polyethyleneimines, polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride, copolymers of polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride and acrylamide, and ethylenedichloride-ammonia. The vinylamine polymer includes from about 1 to about 100 mole percent vinylamine and from about 1 to about 99 mole percent of at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of amidine vinylformamide, vinyl alcohol, vinyl acetate, vinyl pyrrolidinone and the esters, amides, nitriles and salts of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid.

A low viscosity drilling fluid and method for stabilizing a downhole shale formation are disclosed. The fluid comprises an aqueous solution of a partialy transamidated hydrolyzed acrylamide copolymer, potassium chloride, a weighting agent and an optional viscosifying agent. The copolymer comprises from about 50 to about 98 mole percent primary amide functionality, from about 0.1 to about 15 mole percent secondary amide functionality and from about 2 to about 50 mole percent of the acrylate salt. The drilling fluid has a density out from about 8 to about 18 pounds per gallon and a viscosity of from about 5 to about 30 centistokes.
