A display apparatus comprises an at least partially transparent display, the display configured to generate light to form an image for display to a user positioned in front of the display, and at least one of light-transmitting device or light-receiving device positioned behind the display, wherein the at least one of light-transmitting device or light-receiving device is configured to at least one of transmit or receive light through at least part of the display, wherein the at least one of light-transmitting device or light-receiving device comprises or forms part of an optical wireless communications (OWC) apparatus configured to at least one of transmit or receive the light through the at least part of the display.

Display apparatus

A display apparatus comprises an at least partially transparent display, the display configured to generate light to form an image for display to a user positioned in front of the display, and at least one light-transmitting and/or light-receiving device positioned behind the display, wherein the at least one light-transmitting and/or light-receiving device is configured to transmit and/or receive light through at least part of the display, wherein the at least one light-transmitting and/or light-receiving device comprises or forms part of an optical wireless communications (OWC) apparatus configured to transmit and/or receive the light through the at least part of the display.

An optical wireless communication device for transmitting data comprises a transmitter comprising a light source, a controller configured to control operation of the light source to produce modulated light comprising an optical wireless communication signal representative of said data, at least one proximity determining component configured to determine a proximity of an object, and a processing resource configured to determine whether the determined proximity is within a threshold distance, wherein the controller is configured to control operation of the transmitter and/or of at least one other component of the optical wireless communication device in dependence on whether the determined proximity is within the threshold distance.

Optical wireless communication device

A luminaire driver apparatus for use with one or more light emitting diodes or other light sources, comprises voltage control circuitry configured to regulate a supply voltage to one or more light emitting diodes or other light sources; driving circuitry configured to provide a drive current to the one or more light emitting diodes or other light sources, the drive current being dependent on the supply voltage, wherein the driving circuitry is configured to modulate the drive current based on a modulated drive signal such that the one or more light emitting diodes or other light sources produces an optical signal, wherein at least one of the driving circuitry and control circuitry are operable to adapt to a plurality of different types of light emitting diode or other light source. Thereby providing a universal driver function.

Driver apparatus

A transmission system for transmitting data as part of a communications system, the data comprising a plurality of data symbols or elements, the transmission system being configured to divide the data into at least a first data portion and a second data portion, wherein the first data portion is communicated by transmitting signals in selected carrier channels, wherein the transmission system is configured to encode at least one data symbol or element by selecting a relative order of at least one first carrier channel having a first operational state and at least one second carrier channel having a second operational state.

Communication apparatus and method

A transmission apparatus that produces, generates and/or transmits a unipolar signal representative of an original bipolar signal having one or more data frames, wherein each of the one or more frames of the original bipolar signal are converted into and/or transmitted as a plurality of unipolar portions, frames or frame portions of one or more information streams; and the transmission apparatus is configured to concurrently transmit the one or more information streams and at least one other information stream. Preferably, the different information streams are transmitted simultaneously on the same channel/link. Advantageously, one or more of the information streams are optionally arranged such that the interference due to the at least one other information stream on the at least one information stream does not adversely affect the information carried in the at least one information stream. Transmission scheme for communications systems

A receiver system () having at least one receiver () for receiving optical communications signals () that encode or transmit information; wherein the receiver system () is adapted to produce one or more electrical signals () from the received optical signal () and/or from ambient light () such that the receiver system () is usable as a source of electrical power and the encoded or transmitted information from the received optical communication signal () is recovered or recoverable from the electrical signal(s) (). Embodiments of the invention also relate to a communications system () that further comprises one or more transmitters () and a device having the receiver systems (), along with associated methods of using and producing. Particular embodiments relate to identification tags () and user devices () having a display () that at least partially overlaps the receiver(s) ().

Receiver for communications systems

A communications system having at least one transmitter and at least one receiver, wherein the transmitters and/or receivers have an angular dependence, such that at least one response of the receivers to a received signal and/or at least one property of the signals transmitted by the transmitters is angularly dependent; the receiver and transmitter and/or the signals transmitted by the transmitters of two or more transmitter-receiver pairs have a distinct associated angular arrangement or relationship, wherein the at least one angularly dependent response of the receivers to the signal and/or the at least one angularly dependent property of the signal is dependent on the angular arrangement or relationship; and the system is configured to use the angularly dependent property and/or response to identify or discriminate the transmitter from which the signal was transmitted and/or at least one communication channel associated therewith.
