Multiple virtual disk instances are created, each of which is a virtual machine. Each one of the virtual disk instances aggregates non-volatile data storage of cloud storage volumes that are directly attached to it into a single logical volume. A sub-network is created that connects the virtual disk instances to a network interface of each one of storage controllers of a virtual storage appliance. The storage controllers consume the logical volumes of non-volatile data storage corresponding to the virtual disk instances over the subnetwork, in order to persistently store received user data thereon. The cloud storage volumes are each capable of being attached to only a single virtual machine, and are attached to the virtual disk instances through data storage interfaces of the virtual disk instances.

A method for core dump for a terminated (e.g., 'crashed') application includes instantiating helper processes and performing a multi-threaded streaming of chunks of memory contents to respective helper processes. A set of backend storage resources of respective types is established to receive the core dump. Each helper process performs the following for the respective stream: (1) instantiating a set of writer threads for writing data to the respective different types of backend storage resources, (2) buffering the stream in a sequence-preserving manner, and (3) by each of the writer threads, independently reading buffered chunks and writing them to a respective backend storage resource with preservation of chunk identity to enable later reconstruction of complete memory contents. The time required to generate a core dump for a large memory-intensive application can be shortened, reducing application restart time and promoting application availability.

The system includes a node having an upper topology including a virtual ethernet device, a lower topology including first and second virtual network devices, and a control plane coupled between the upper and lower topology. A second receive path from the second virtual network device to the virtual ethernet device is established, such that the virtual ethernet device receives communication from the first and second virtual network devices and the first transmit path is disabled. The technique involves receiving, from a server in the server cluster, set of heartbeat signals through a power transmission circuit constructed and arranged to deliver power to the server cluster. The technique further involves, in response to detecting the interruption in receiving the set of heartbeat signals, performing a remedial activity to coordinate input/output (I/O) operations among the multiple servers in the server cluster.

Nodes of a protected system perform protected network address discovery by establishing a management overlay network using static network addresses not subject to network discovery, and using the overlay network to communicate application-level network address information among the protected nodes. Each protected node operates to (1) maintain a store of the application-level network address information from the overlay network, and instantiate protective packet filters at node ports, and (2) in response to an outgoing network address discovery request, (a) use a packet filter to consult the store and retrieve target network address information for a target of the discovery request, and (b) make an on-node response with the target network address information without forwarding the discovery request out to the substrate network. Network discovery is thus protected from the effects of potential network address conflicts involving the other nodes, which may be outside the control of the protected system.

The techniques include inserting, in a development build image, one or more security-sensitive scripts encrypted with a unique encryption key for the development build image, and inserting, in a release build image, the security-sensitive scripts encrypted with a different unique encryption key for the release build image. The techniques further include saving the unique encryption key for the development build image in an artifact repository, and securely deleting the different unique encryption key for the release build image. In this way, user access to certain software code or scripts, device files, and/or other security-sensitive features can be restricted in a manner that is more user friendly to software development and/or information technology (or 'DevOps') engineers.

A new single-node appliance is added to the storage cluster, the storage cluster includes one or more original single-node appliances and an internal remote system configured to facilitate intra-cluster orchestration operation. A remote system object representing the new single-node appliance is generated in the internal remote system. An appliance identifier for the remote system object representing the new single-node appliance is determined. In response to determining that the appliance identifier is a non-zero appliance identifier, an internal remote session between the remote system object and the storage cluster is established. The one or more original single-node appliances and the new single-node appliance are presented as a unified system. Protected storage volumes are provisioned on any of the single-node appliances included in the unified system.
