This disclosure describes illumination assemblies operable to generate a patterned illumination that maintain high contrast over a wide temperature range. An implementation of the illumination assembly can include an array of monochromatic light sources positioned on an illumination plane, first and second optical elements, and an exit aperture. A chief ray of each light source within the array of monochromatic light sources can substantially converge at an exit aperture. In such implementations light generated by the array of monochromatic light sources can be used efficiently.

Embodiments relate to a free space optical (FSO) communication terminal. The terminal includes an optical source and optics. The optical source can produce optical beams at different wavelengths. The optics direct optical beams in a direction towards a remote FSO communication terminal. A wavelength dependence of the optics results in a divergence of the optical beam that depends on a wavelength of the optical beam. A controller may control the wavelength of the optical beam produced by the optical source, thereby adjusting the divergence of the optical beam (e.g., according to an acquisition process or a tracking process).

Structured light projection system includes an array of light emitting devices, which is configured to emit a pattern of light. A projection lens is configured to receive and project the pattern of light from the array to a first optical element. The first optical element alters the pattern of light to generate a first emitted pattern of light that is irregular. The first emitted pattern of light is transmitted to a second optical element that is configured to receive the first pattern of light and reproduce the first emitted pattern along a second emitted pattern, which comprises multiple instances of the first emitted pattern arranged in a tiled pattern.

Generating structured light

This disclosure relates to illumination modules operable to increase the area over which an illumination source, such as a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser or light-emitting diode, illuminates. Such illumination modules include a substrate having electrical contacts, an illumination source electrically connected to the substrate, a collimation assembly operable to collimate the light generated from the illumination source, a translation assembly operable to translate light over an area, and a mask assembly. In various implementations the illumination source may be rather small in area, thereby reducing the cost of the illumination module. Some implementations of the illumination module can be used for the acquisition of three-dimensional data in some cases, while in other cases some implementations of the illumination module can be used for other applications requiring projected light.

This disclosure describes various modules that can provide ultra-precise and stable packaging for an optoelectronic device such as a light emitter or light detector. The modules include vertical alignment features that can be machined, as needed, during fabrication of the modules, to establish a precise distance between the optoelectronic device and an optical element or optical assembly disposed over the optoelectronic device.

The present disclosure describes optoelectronic modules that include an optical system tilted with respect to a focal plane. For example, an optoelectronic module can includes an optical system including a vertical alignment feature. An optoelectronic sub-assembly includes an active optoelectronic device, wherein the vertical alignment rests on a surface of the optoelectronic sub-assembly and wherein an optical axis of the optical system is tilted with respect to a focal plane in the sub-assembly.

An electronic device may have a touch panel. The touch panel may detect touch events using one or more cameras. The touch panel may include a planar exterior surface, such as a cover glass, that extends over an active region of a display and an inactive peripheral region. The cameras may be located underneath the inactive peripheral region. The cameras may include a light turning element to allow the cameras to detect touch events, without being raised above the exterior surface of the active region of the display (e.g., without having a raised profile). The touch panel may detect touch events using dynamic zooming techniques. As an example, the touch panel may divide the active region into sections, search for touch events in each section, zoom into sections in which touch events are found, and further search the sections in which touch events were found.

The present disclosure describes structured light projection in which a structured light projector includes a light emitter and a compound patterned mask. The mask includes a spacer substrate that is transparent to a wavelength of light emitted by the light emitter. On a first side of the spacer substrate is a first reflective surface having apertures therein to allow light to pass through. Lenses are arranged to focus light, produced by the light emitter, toward the apertures in the first reflective surface. A second reflective surface on a second side of the spacer substrate opposite the first side has apertures therein to allow light passing through the spacer substrate to exit the compound patterned mask.

Electronic devices may be provided with imaging modules that include plasmonic light collectors. Plasmonic light collectors may be configured to exploit an interaction between incoming light and plasmons in the plasmonic light collector to alter the path of the incoming light. Plasmonic light collectors may include one or more spectrally tuned plasmonic image pixels configured to preferentially trap light of a given frequency. Spectrally tuned plasmonic image pixels may include plasmonic structures formed form a patterned metal layer over doped silicon layers. Doped silicon layers may be interposed between plasmonic structures and a reflective layer. Plasmonic image pixels may be used to absorb and detect as much as, or more than, ninety percent of incident light at wavelengths ranging from the infrared to the ultraviolet. Plasmonic image pixels that capture light of different colors may be arranged in patterned arrays to form imager modules or imaging spectrometers for optofluidic microscopes.

An image sensor integrated circuit may contain image sensor pixels. A channel containing a fluid with particles such as cells may be formed on top of the image sensor. Some of the image sensor pixels may form a calibration sensor and some of the image sensor pixels may form an imager. As the fluid and particles flow through the channel at a flow rate, the calibration sensor may measures the flow rate and illumination intensity in the channel. Based on calibration data such as measured flow rate and measured illumination intensity, adjustments may be made to ensure that the imager acquires satisfactory image data. The adjustments may include flow rate adjustments, image acquisition data rate adjustments, and illumination adjustments. A processing unit in the channel may contain a laser or other component to destroy selected cells. A flared region in the channel may be used as a chromatograph.

System for targeting cells or other materials

Methods, systems and apparatuses for modeling high resolution images which significantly shortens computation time and reduces image artifacts, as compared to known methods. Embodiments implement a look-up table, to compute once and store the point spread functions for various points of an image. During modeling of the optical system, previously stored point spread functions may be used to determine the point spread function for a specified point using a weighted interpolation of the point spread functions that have been stored for nearby points.

Methods, systems and apparatuses for modeling optical images

The invention, in various exemplary embodiments, incorporates multiple image sensor arrays, with separate respective color filters, on the same imager die. One exemplary embodiment is an image sensor comprising a plurality of arrays of pixel cells at a surface of a substrate, wherein each pixel cell comprises a photo-conversion device. The arrays are configured to commonly capture an image. An image processor circuit is connected to said plurality of arrays and configured to combine the captured images, captured by the plurality of arrays, and output a color image.

The lenses are held together by a bonding material such as epoxy, which may also include a light absorbing dye. The invention also relates to a low-cost method of manufacturing the lens system out of glass, using low cost glass ball lenses to create the hemispherical lenses.
