Applicator devices for depositing a fluid sample onto a substrate, as well as methods for their use, are provided. The subject devices are elongate in shape and have a first end and a second end. The first end has a planar surface of substantially circular shape with a conical protuberance arising therefrom. The second end may have a means for attaching to an automated movement means. In using the subject devices, the first end is dipped into a fluid sample and then contacted with the surface of a substrate in a manner sufficient to deposit a fluid sample onto the substrate surface. The subject devices and methods find use in a variety of different applications, particularly in the preparation of biopolymeric arrays.

Methods and kits are provided for labeling nucleic acids, e.g. for use in array based hybridization assays. In the subject methods, target nucleic acid is generated from an initial nucleic acid source, e.g. mRNA, where the target nucleic acid is characterized by having at least one reactive functionality that is not a moiety found on naturally occurring nucleic acids. Functionalized label is then conjugated to the target nucleic acid, either before or after it has been hybridized to array of nucleic acids stably associated with the surface of a solid support. The subject methods find use in a variety of array based hybridization assays, including differential expression assays.

Methods of labeling nucleic acids for use in array based hybridization assays

Hybridization chambers suitable for use in binding, e.g. hybridization, assays are provided. The subject chambers comprise an elongate container, a block element and a cap, where each of the components is preferably injection molded. Also provided are methods of using the subject chambers and kits that include the subject chambers. The subject chambers find use in a variety of applications, particularly in hybridization assays in which small sample volumes are employed.
