An optical arrangement for a LIDAR system includes a laser, scanner, fold mirror, lens, and sensors. Adding a wedge-shaped optical element creates an auxiliary field of view, when positioned to overlie an edge portion of the lens. The wedge-shaped optical element may have a variable transparency preventing reception by the sensors of excessive signals from close targets. The sensors may be: a plurality of sensors with unique lengths/widths, arranged to form a linear array; or sensors with the same length/width, but positioned to form an arcuate shape, compensating for an arcuate scan line; or two columns of sensors, one with a field of view in focus at far field positions, and the other in focus at near field positions, correcting for parallax effect/error; or a column of highly sensitive sensors surrounded by a plurality of guard rail sensors having higher immunity to damage from stray laser light.

Enhanced hybrid LIDAR with high-speed scanning

An autonomous vehicle LIDAR system includes: a laser; optical transmission system to shape/scan the light beam along light paths toward a target; an optical reception system collecting reflected laser light; and an electronic system synchronizing the beam scan, performing time-of-arrival measurements, and determining target range. The reception system includes an objective lens and a one-dimensional sensor array, each sensor formed of a grid of sub-pixels. A first transmission system includes: a cylindrical lens, scanning mirror, and collimating lens. The cylindrical lens expands the laser beam only in a first orthogonal direction to the optical path, producing an oval beam. A second transmission system includes: a focusing lens, scanning mirror, and second lens with lenslets being sequentially illuminated by the optical paths that individually focus the light that's collimated by a third lens creating spots on the target. Each sensor includes an FET that selectively couples sub-pixels to a readout channel.

Hybrid LIDAR with optically enhanced scanned laser

An electric power generator for a projectile moving through the air is based on vibrational, rather than rotational motion. The electric power generator uses an air stream through, which the projectile is traveling typically 100-250 m/s for mortars to up to 1,500 m/s for sabot or even higher electrically fired rounds. A typical 223 rifle round after being fired has energy of over 1700 J, which is equivalent to 1700 W seconds. If a Nano computer was able to extract energy of for example 50 nanowatts during bullet flight which rarely exceeds two seconds the power needed during the flight would be only a few parts per billion of the bullet's energy. Even allowing for very inefficient extraction of power, the necessary power to operate on onboard electronic devices such as computers and sensors can be extracted from the airstream through which the projectile travels.

A laser radar includes: a laser, an optical transmission system, a 1-dimensional array of photo-detectors, an optical reception system, and an electronic control system. The laser emits a wavelength of light, and the optical transmission system shapes the light into a beam, and scans the beam along a fan of transmission light paths toward a target. The photo-detectors are capable of time-of-arrival measurements and are sensitive to the wavelength of light. The optical reception system collects the laser light reflected from the target along a fan of reception light paths. The electronic control system synchronizes the scan of the beam with a respective time-of-arrival measurement from each of the photo-detectors, and analyzes the time-of-arrival measurements. The system is configured for all of the transmission light paths and all of the reception light paths to lie in one plane, with all of the reception light paths intersecting with at least one of the transmission light paths.

Hybrid LADAR with co-planar scanning and imaging field-of-view

A system for troubleshooting signals in a cellular communications network, and in particular, for determining the cause of distortion or corruption of such signals, includes a robotic or other type of switch. The robotic switch can tap into selected uplink fiber-optic lines and selected downlink fiber-optic lines between radio equipment and radio equipment controllers in a wireless (e.g., cellular) network to extract therefrom the I and Q data. The selected I and Q data, in an optical form, is provided to an optical-to-electrical converter forming part of the system. The system includes an FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) or the like, and an analytic computer unit, or web server, and SSD (Solid State Drive) and magnetic disk storage, among other components of the system. The system analyzes the I and Q data provided to it, and determines the cause, or at least narrows the field of possible causes, of impairment to transmitted signals. The system includes a display which provides the troubleshooting information thereon for a user of the system to review, or other form of a report, and may communicate the analytical findings to a remote location over a public or private internet protocol network.

Disclosed are various embodiments of systems, devices and methods for generating electricity, transforming voltages and generating motion using one or more piezoelectric elements operably coupled to one or more non-piezoelectric resonating elements. In one embodiment, a non-piezoelectric resonating element is configured to oscillate and dissipate mechanical energy into a piezoelectric element, which converts a portion of such mechanical energy into electricity and therefore acts as a generator. In another embodiment, a piezoelectric element is configured to drive one or more mechanical elements operably coupled to the one or more non-piezoelectric resonating elements, and therefore acts as a motor. In still another embodiment, a piezoelectric element is operably coupled to a non-piezoelectric resonating element to form an electrical transformer. The mechanical properties of the non-piezoelectric resonating elements are typically selected to permit relatively high permissible stress and strain in comparison to the corresponding piezoelectric elements to which coupled or attached.

Methods of powering a heat engine with a remote lasers are disclosed, where the ambient air surrounding the engine is used as the working fluid. All methods include inputting the ambient air into the engine, absorbing laser optical radiation, turning it into heat, supplying the heat to the air, harvesting mechanical work from expanding air and releasing the air back into surrounding atmosphere.
