A method and system for determining an optical waveform based on a plurality of print features of a selected marking of a document. The method and system comprise obtaining optical image data representing the print features of the selected marking. The optical image data is corrected for at least one of print contrast or reflectance of the print features in the optical image data using respective print contrast thresholds or reflectance thresholds to produce a converted pixel map of the selected marking, the pixel map containing an ordered sequence of values. Also included is a generation module to transform the print features represented in the converted pixel map to a plurality of corresponding waveform features to produce the optical waveform of the selected marking, the corresponding waveform features including a plurality of spaced apart peaks representing respective optical signal levels of the print features.

Optical waveform generation and use based on print characteristics for MICR data of paper documents

A system for determining a plurality of PCS values for a document image representing a document having at least one area of interest on a surface of the physical item for containing critical data and a background image positioned on the surface, the document suitable for positioning in a digital image recorder, the system determines from the memory a plurality of PCS threshold values having specified surface locations matching the assigned locations of the calculated PCS values and compares the PCS threshold values with the calculated PCS values to determine whether the target portions satisfy their respective PCS threshold values; wherein the degree of target portions that satisfy their PCS threshold value is indicative of the acceptability of the design of the background image when processed by the digital image recorder.

Comparison of optical and magnetic character data for identification of character defect type

A plurality of PCS values are determined for a document having an area of interest containing critical data and a background image. Reflectance values distributed across the document are obtained and PCS threshold values corresponding to a plurality of locations on the document are stored in memory. Respective PCS values of a plurality of target portions of the surface are determined, each respective PCS value based on a reflectance value of the corresponding target portion and a reflectance value of a corresponding region located adjacent to the target portion, each of the regions being different for each target portion, each PCS value assigned a location representative of the location of the target portion, the size of the region being greater than the size of the target portion. The stored PCS threshold values are compared with the calculated PCS values to determine the acceptability of the background image.

Dynamic print contrast signal determination for paper documents

A system for determining a plurality of reflectance values for an item design representing a physical item having at least one area of interest on a surface of the physical item for containing critical data and a background feature positioned on the surface, the physical item suitable for positioning in a digital image recorder, the system comprising: an input module configured for receiving one or more material reflectance values of a substrate for providing said surface and design parameters for said background feature, the design parameters including a color and a color density of said background feature; a memory configured for storing a plurality of color reflectance values assigned to a corresponding plurality of selected combinations of specified design parameters; a look-up module configured for determining from the memory one or more color reflectance values having the specified design parameters matching the design parameters for said background feature; a combination module configured for combining the one or more material reflectance values with the corresponding one or more color reflectance values to produce resultant one or more design reflectance values representative of the reflectance of physical item when having the background feature positioned on said surface of the substrate; wherein the one or more design reflectance values of the item design are for use in determining whether the design parameters would produce the physical item having an acceptable digital image when processed by the digital image recorder.
