In a web reeling machine such as the reeling portion of a paper machine the successful introduction of a fresh reel bar to maintain the continuity of the reeling operation is dependent upon turn-up of the web onto the rotating reel bar followed by build-up of a roll on the reel. The end of a bifurcated fiber optic cable is positioned adjacent the jaw clamps that retain the stationary end bearings of the reel bar so as to provide an indication of the occurrence of successful turn-up by detecting a persevering change in the clamp/bearing relationship due to roll growth. The other end of the bifurcated cable is connected to an light emitter and a light detector. The light emitter generates a light signal along the bifurcated fiber optic cable towards a light guide path in a jaw clamp so that the light signal passes through the light guide path. When the jaw clamp moves, the light guide path moves and the jaw clamp reflects the light signal back toward the bifurcated fiber optic cable which transmits the reflected signal to a light detector which detects the change in reel bar location due to roll growth. The system can tolerate motion inconsistencies caused by reel bar bounce, due to a rough turn-up of the web.

Detection apparatus for paper build up on reel bar

A reel bar drive for use with a web winding system, such as the dry end of a paper making machine has a pair of driving wheels adapted to make driving contact with a peripheral end portion of a reel bar. The driving wheels are mounted on a pivotal platform located to one side of the winder. The platform is pivotable in an arcuate path having a component direction relative to the axis of the reel bar so as to move the driving wheels into driving relation with a peripheral end portion of the reel bar. Owing to the pivotal mounting arrangement, the position of the driving wheels are adjustable to compensate for changes in the reel bar position as it commences its web reeling operation. The reel bar drive may utilize its self weight to enhance frictional contact between the drive wheels and the reel bar. Upon withdrawal of the supporting platform, the drive wheels are displaced completely clear of the winding system. Thus, the reel bar drive is suitable for use with a reel bar auto-loading system and facilitates safe maintenance of component parts of the reel bar drive.

Double tire reel spool starter

A reel bar loading device is provided having sloping storage rails located above the driving roll. The storage rails are pivotally connected at their lower ends to second rails. The second rails have upper end portions, downwardly sloping portions and lower end portions. The second rails in a first position are in alignment with the first rails and provide a continuum of the track permitting the reel to descend the second rails into an awaiting transfer arm mechanism. The second rails are pivotal outwardly precluding movement of a reel from the first rails and allowing the transfer arm mechanism to move into a winding position. A pair of lowering arms engage the reel at the opposite ends of the reels adjacent to and inside of the second rails to control the descent of the reel over the second rails when the second rails are in their first position.

Reel bar loading mechanism with outwardly pivoting guide rails

A reel bar loading device is provided having sloping storage rails located above the driving roll. The storage rails have lower ends that collapse bringing the reel into the initial winding contact with the driving roll. Once initial winding contact has been established, a transfer arm can be brought up to engage the reel and move the reel into a second winding position remote from the rails while keeping the reel in winding contact during this movement.

Constant tension reel with automatic reel bar loader

A reel bar loading device is provided with a pair of lowering arms onto which reel bars are rolled one at a time, the lowering arms being pivotally movable from an upper position adapted to receive a reel bar on a supporting surface thereof and a lower transfer position while a reel bar rolls along the length of the surface into contact with an abutment and is moved downwardly with the lowering arms into position on a reel transfer device in the lower transfer position. The reel lowering arms are preferably provided with a cam stop that moves into stopping position to stop movement of reel bars into a loading position when the lowering arms are not in their upper positions.
