A photovoltaic system includes: a photovoltaic generator comprising strings that each includes one or more photovoltaic cells; a power converter; switches; and a controller. The power converter is configured to convert direct current (DC) power provided by the photovoltaic generator into alternating current (AC) power, and to output the AC power. Each switch is associated with one of the strings and is configured to connect the associated string to the power converter when set to a first setting, such that power generated by the first string can flow to the power converter. Each switch is also configured to disconnect the string from the power converter when set to a second setting. The controller is configured to control the power provided by the photovoltaic generator by selectively connecting the strings of the photovoltaic generator to the power converter by controlling the settings of the switches.

Photovoltaic voltage regulation

An anti-islanding implementation that introduces a small, continuously varying phase shift pattern in the output current of an inverter. In grid-connected mode, this phase shift pattern has no impact on the frequency of the inverter's output voltage. However, when islanded, the phase shift will cause the voltage frequency to deviate from nominal. Changes in the output current phase thus correlate well with the voltage frequency, so a covariance index is used to detect an islanding configuration. When this index exceeds a threshold, a larger phase shift pattern is introduced in the output current, large enough to cause the voltage frequency to fall outside the inverter's trip protection window without compromising the inverter's power quality yet ensuring reliable tripping of the inverter.

Anti-islanding for grid-tie inverter using covariance estimation and logic decision maker

An inverter operable to supply high power factor electrical power to an AC load including an AC power grid includes a DC bus and a DC to AC converter section of the full bridge type. The inverter further includes a voltage sensor configured to produce an instantaneous output voltage signal representing instantaneous output voltage of the inverter, a rectification circuit configured to produce a rectified output voltage signal, a power signal generator, an output current sensor configured for sensing an output current of the inverter, a rectification circuit configured to produce the rectified output current signal, a sign circuit for producing a signal representing the sign of the output voltage and a control apparatus. The control apparatus includes a scaled rectified voltage signal generator, a pulse width modulation (PWM) signal generator configured to produce a pulse width modulation signal in response to the scaled rectified voltage signal and the rectified output current signal and a switching leg controller circuit configured to control the full bridge switches.

Output power factor control of pulse-width modulated inverter

A method and apparatus for reducing switching losses in a leg of a switching circuit during commutation of current between first and second complementary switching elements thereof is disclosed. The method involves impeding changes in current flow between a load current node and a first supply conductor through a first path comprised of a first saturable inductor and the first switching element, while impeding changes in current flow between the load current node and a second supply conductor through a second path comprised of a second saturable inductor and the second switching element.
