Disclosed are systems, methods, and devices for communicating a source of a 10SPE wake. Such a communication may be performed over a low-pin count hardware interface of a 10SPE physical layer (PHY) module having a split arrangement. A controller side of a 10SPE PHY may perform a local or remote 10SPE wake forward in response to a communicated source of a wake. Also disclosed is a digital interface for operatively coupling a PHY controller to PHY transceiver over a low-pin count connection, where the digital interface includes circuitry for checking the integrity of circuitry of the digital interface. Also disclosed is a PHY transceiver of a 10SPE PHY, where the transceiver includes a circuitry for controlling a starting polarity of frames.

Various embodiments relate to detecting a cable fault within a network. A method may include transmitting a pulse signal to a cable of a shared bus from a node, and observing a signal received at the node in response to the pulse signal. The method may also include determining a fault condition of the cable based on the pulse signal and on an amplitude of each sample of a number of samples of the one or more observed signals.

On or more examples relate, generally, to an apparatus that includes a reconciliation sublayer of a physical layer, a reduced media independent interface (RMII) of the physical layer, and a logic circuit. Such a logic circuit may operate to receive a changed carrier sense signal provided by the reconciliation sublayer, generate a further changed carrier sense signal at least partially responsive to a prediction that the changed carrier sense signal would cause unintended signaling at the RMII, and provide the further changed carrier sense signal to the RMII.

Some embodiments relate to end of line systems that include legacy media access control (MAC) devices and PHY devices that implement improved data reception handling disclosed herein. The improved data reception handling improves the operation of legacy systems, and the MAC more specifically, and in some cases to comply with media access tuning protocols implemented at the physical layer.

Physical layer devices and related methods for determining Bit Error Rates (BERs) and correcting errors in signals received through shared transmission media of wireless local area networks are disclosed. A physical layer device is configured to identify coding violations in received signal, determine a rate of the coding violations in the signal, and estimate a BER of the signal to be equal to the determined rate of the coding violations. A physical layer device is configured to invert a half symbol immediately preceding or immediately following a coding violation based, at least in part, on signal integrities of the half symbol immediately preceding and the half symbol immediately following the coding violation to correct a bit error.

Disclosed embodiments relate, generally, to improved data reception handling at a physical layer (PHY). Some embodiments relate to end of line systems that include legacy media access control (MAC) and PHY that implement improved data reception handling disclosed herein. The improved data reception handling improves the operation of the end of line systems, and the MAC more specifically, and in some cases to comply with media access tuning protocols implemented at the physical layer.

Various embodiments relate to detecting collisions on a communication network. A method may include transmitting a first signal to a shared bus. The method may also include observing a second signal at the shared bus during the transmitting. Further, the method may include detecting a collision on the shared bus in response to an amplitude of the second signal being one of greater than a first threshold and less than a second threshold.

Systems, device, and methods related to estimating a Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) of a signal are disclosed. A method of estimating an SNR includes setting a threshold of a comparator of a physical layer device to a first value, applying a signal to the comparator, and determining a first bit error number of an output of the comparator with the threshold set at the first value. The method also includes setting the threshold of the comparator to a second value that is different from the first value, applying the signal to the comparator, and determining a second bit error number of the output of the comparator with the threshold set at the second value. The method further includes determining an SNR of the signal based on the first bit error number and the second bit error number.

Signal to noise ratio and bit error rate estimation for wired local area networks and related systems, devices, and methods

Disclosed are systems and devices for interfacing media access tuning circuitry that implements collision handling or traffic shaping with a reduced media independent interface (RMII). In some embodiments, an interface circuitry manages emulated signals generated by a media access tuning circuitry in response to detecting that the emulated signals would cause incorrect operation of an RMII. Also disclosed is a physical layer (PHY) device for a multidrop network. In some embodiments the PHY device implements physical layer collision techniques and operable to communicate with a media access control (MAC) device via an RMII, where the MAC is configured for carrier-sense multiple access (CSMA), CSMA with collision detection (CSMA/CD), or CSMA with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA). Also disclosed are processes for managing signaling at a PHY that implements physical layer collision avoidance (PLCA) or traffic shaping, as the case may be.

Systems, devices, and methods related to selecting a sample phase of a signal are disclosed. A method includes sampling a signal including a plurality of symbols with a plurality of different sample phases to obtain sample values of each of the plurality of symbols at each of the plurality of different sample phases. The signal is received from a shared transmission medium. The method also includes determining an edge sample phase of the plurality of different sample phases that corresponds to edges of the symbols based on the sample values. The method further includes determining a center sample phase of the plurality of different sample phases based on the determined edge sample phase, and using the determined center sample phase to determine values of the symbols.

Various embodiments relate to wired local area networks. A method may include detecting, at a node in a wired local area network, at least one event. A physical layer device of the network node is configured to implement a physical level collision avoidance (PLCA) sublayer. The at least one event may include at least one of an amount of data stored in a first-in-first-out (FIFO) buffer of the node being at least a threshold amount, and a received packet being a precision time protocol (PTP) packet incurring variable delay. The method may further include emulating a collision at the node in response to the at least one detected event.
