A catalyst composition includes an active material having a molybdenum- and sulfur-containing substance impregnated with an effective amount of cesium sufficient to promote synthesis of an alcohol, optionally carried on an inert support, wherein the active material is at least substantially free of a transition metal. The present invention is further directed to methods of preparing and using the same.

Production of oxygen-enriched gas streams is disclosed herein. Air streams contact an oxygen-selective mixed conductor particularly a perovskite material whereby oxygen is retained or adsorbed on the perovskite and can be employed in a variety of processes such as in combusting a fuel gas, heat recovery and boiler related operations.

Oxy-fuel combustion process

An improved process for the catalytic partial oxidation of hydrocarbons to produce hydrogen and carbon monoxide and less than &#x2dc;2% carbon dioxide is disclosed. The process further permits the reaction to be initiated at room temperature, and utilizes a metal catalyst deposited on a ceria-coated zirconia monolith support, which exhibits high conversions of hydrocarbons to synthesis gas (hydrogen and carbon monoxide).

Monolith based catalytic partial oxidation process for syngas production

Supported perovskite-type oxides are described. The perovskite-type oxides have the general formula of AA'BB&#x2032;O, wherein A is an ion of a metal of Group IIIa or IIIb of the periodic table of elements or mixtures thereof; A&#x2032; is an ion of a metal of Groups Ia or IIa of the periodic table or mixtures thereof; B and B&#x2032; are ions of a d-block transition metal of the periodic table or mixtures thereof; x, x&#x2032;, y and y&#x2032; vary from 0 to 1; 0.95&#x3c;x+x&#x2032;&#x3c;1.05; 0.95&#x3c;y+y&#x2032;&#x3c;1.05; &#x3b4; is the deviation from ideal oxygen stoichiometry. This invention also provides for the selection of support materials and the shapes of supported perovskite-type oxides as well as the methods for making them.

Supported perovskite-type oxides and methods for preparation thereof

A method of separating a first gaseous component from a gas mixture comprising a first gaseous component and a second gaseous component comprising passing the gaseous mixture into an adsorption zone containing an adsorbent material capable of preferentially adsorbing at least one of the gaseous components in the gaseous mixture, to separate the first gaseous component from the second gaseous component wherein the adsorbent material is a monolithic wheel having a plurality of channels throughout, the channels being aligned parallel to the direction of flow of the gaseous mixture and having a wall thickness of less than 1 mm and recovering the non-preferentially adsorbed gaseous component from the adsorption zone. Preferably, the adsorption zone comprises multiple layers of monolithic structures in the shape of a wheel stacked one upon the other in a direction parallel to the direction of the flow of the gaseous mixture and formed by spirally winding a sheet of corrugated adsorbable material about a hub.

Air separation using monolith adsorbent bed

A process for separating a gas component from a gas mixture is disclosed. A gas mixture is passed through an adsorption zone which contains an adsorbent which will selectively adsorb a gaseous component from the gas mixture. The adsorption zone contains a layer of monolithic adsorbent and a layer of adsorption beads. Optionally, a third monolithic layer may be employed. The adsorption zone is typically contained in an adsorption vessel.

Adsorption processes

An improved method for preparing and activating monolith adsorbents is disclosed. A regeneration gas is passed through the formed monolith adsorbent at a temperature sufficient to decompose at least part of the binding agents in the adsorbent. The present invention also provides for the use of the treated adsorbent monoliths in separating gases in cyclical separation processes such as vacuum swing adsorption processes.

Activation processes for monolith adsorbents

A gas separation process comprising feeding a gaseous mixture comprising at least two components having different adsorption characteristics into an adsorption vessel containing at least one adsorbent material capable of preferentially adsorbing at least one of the gaseous components in the gaseous mixture and subjecting the gaseous mixture to non-cryogenic conditions which enable the preferentially adsorbable gaseous component in the gaseous mixture to adsorb onto the adsorbent material and separate from the non-adsorbed component in the gaseous mixture which pass through the adsorbent vessel wherein at least one adsorbent material in the adsorbent vessel comprises a composite particle having an inner core comprising a non-porous, non-adsorbent material and at least one outer layer comprising the adsorbent material. In another embodiment of the process of the present invention a hollow particulate adsorbent material is utilized.

Composite adsorbent beads for adsorption process

A method of separating a first gaseous component from a gas mixture comprising the first gaseous component and a second gaseous component comprising passing the gaseous mixture into an adsorption zone containing an adsorbent material capable of preferentially adsorbing at least one of the gaseous components in the gaseous mixture, to separate the first gaseous component from the second gaseous component wherein the adsorbent material is a monolith having a plurality of channels throughout, the channels being aligned parallel to the direction of flow of the gaseous mixture and having a wall thickness of less than 1 mm and (b) recovering the non-preferentially adsorbed gaseous component from the adsorption zone. Petrochemicals are produced by the vapor phase reaction of a hydrocarbon with air in the presence of a suitable catalyst. The petrochemical product is removed from the product gas stream, and part or all of the remaining gas stream is passed through a bed of hydrophobic adsorbent, which adsorbs mainly the unreacted hydrocarbon from the gas stream without adsorbing water vapor. The adsorbed hydrocarbon is purged from the bed with air, and the air-hydrocarbon mixture is recycled to the partial oxidation reactor.

Process for the production of petrochemicals

An apparatus for purifying feed air by adsorption of water vapor and carbon dioxide therefrom includes a purification vessel in which are defined vertically arrange chambers and another purification vessel in which are defined vertically arranged chambers. None of the chambers is in a series flow relationship with any of the others. Each chamber contains a bed of one or more adsorbents which is able to adsorb water vapor and carbon dioxide from the feed air and which forms a reversible part of a gas flow path extending between locations external of the vessels. Valves are associated with the vessel and are operable to permit during a first adsorption period of time simultaneous flows of air to to purified through at least two of the chambers and during a second regeneration period of time simultaneous reverse flows of regeneration gas through the same chambers.

Purification apparatus

An air prepurification system which includes vertically oriented adsorption vessels containing, from top to bottom, a layer of moisture-selective adsorbent, a first layer of carbon dioxide-selective adsorbent and a second layer of carbon dioxide-selective adsorbent wherein the particle size of carbon dioxide-selective adsorbent in the second layer of carbon dioxide-selective adsorbent is smaller than the particle size of both the moisture-selective adsorbent and the carbon dioxide-selective adsorbent in the first layer of carbon dioxide-selective adsorbent. The air purification system is designed for use in a temperature swing adsorption process in which air is passed downwardly through the adsorption vessels during the adsorption step and upwardly through the vessels during the adsorbent regeneration step.

Process and apparatus for gas purification

Petrochemicals are produced by the vapor phase reaction of a hydrocarbon with air in the presence of a suitable catalyst. The petrochemical product is removed from the product gas stream, and unreacted hydrocarbon in part or all of the remaining gas stream is recovered by subjecting the gas stream to a TSA process in which the adsorbed hydrocarbon is desorbed at elevated pressure by purging the adsorbent with hot compressed air, the air being heated by compression. The compressed air-desorbed hydrocarbon mixture is recycled to the reactor.

Hydrocarbon gas is separated from a gas mixture by concentration swing adsorption in a system consisting of a pair of adjacent adsorption beds that are contained in a cylindrical vessel and separated by a flat partition wall. The system is operated with the beds out of phase, such that one bed is in adsorption service while the other bed is regenerated by purging the bed with air. The pressure and temperature in the bed undergoing adsorption does not differ from the pressure and temperature, respectively in the bed being regenerated sufficiently to create significant stresses in the partition separating the beds. In a modified version, the gas mixture and purge air are dried by simultaneously passing these gases through one pair of adjacent adsorption beds that are contained in a cylindrical vessel and separated by a flat partition wall with the respective pressures and temperatures in the two beds being substantially equal, while a substantially identical pair of adjacent adsorption beds are being regenerated by passing heated nonadsorbed gas from the hydrocarbon adsorption system through the beds at a substantially constant temperature and pressure.

Process and apparatus for the separation of gases

A petrochemical is produced by the vapor phase reaction of a hydrocarbon with air in the presence of a suitable catalyst. The petrochemical is removed from the reactor effluent, and part or all of the remaining petrochemical-free gas stream is passed through a hydrocarbon-selective adsorbent, which adsorbs hydrocarbon from the gas stream, leaving a hydrocarbon-depleted waste gas. Hydrocarbon is purged from the adsorbent with air, and the air-hydrocarbon mixture is recycled to the partial oxidation reactor. The purge air, and preferably both the purge air and the petrochemical-free gas stream are dried by passage through beds of zeolite 3A prior to being introduced into the hydrocarbon-selective adsorbent, and the beds of zeolite 3A are regenerated by passing heated hydrocarbon-depleted waste gas therethrough.
