This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on computer storage media, for fast role switching between master and slave roles among wireless nodes. In one aspect, wireless nodes, such as wireless earbuds, coupled to a wireless source, may dynamically and intelligently swap master and slave roles to optimize battery life in the wireless nodes.

Reduced Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) latency on a link between a source and a pair of headphones may be achieved by improving the quality of the link between secondary and primary and establishing a direct link between the source and secondary to mitigate the link quality issues of the source and primary link. In one example, this involves receiving, via a first receiver, packets from a source on a first wireless connection, determining, by the first receiver, that a first packet received via the first wireless connection has an error, establishing a second connection between the first receiver and a second receiver, and establishing a third connection between the second receiver and the source. In particular, the first receiver may be configured as a primary True Wireless Stereo (TWS) Bluetooth device and the second receiver may be configured as a secondary TWS Bluetooth device.

Latency reduction

This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatus for smart sockets in a communication network. A smart socket can be implemented to monitor one or more power quality characteristics of a power supply providing energy to the smart home environment. Smart sockets implemented to monitor power quality characteristics can sense when power fluctuations are present in the power supply, and shut down connected devices to prevent damage. A plurality of coordinating smart sockets can be implemented to optimize power utilization when the smart home environment is operating on backup power, during low electricity tariff periods, or when operating on a renewable energy source. The plurality of coordinating smart sockets can be implemented to autonomously schedule tasks based on a context of operation of other devices in the smart home environment. The plurality of coordinating smart sockets can be implemented to achieve configurable energy targets for the smart home environment.

Smart socket power monitoring and coordination

Two devices (e.g., two wireless Bluetooth earbuds) may exchange device address information (e.g., Bluetooth address information) and may identify a primary address. When either of the devices connect to a source device (e.g., a phone), the primary address may be used by the connecting device such that the pair of devices appear as a single device (e.g., a Bluetooth-pairable device) to the source device, regardless of the device connecting to the source device as the primary device. The primary device may then send identity information (e.g., that has been exchanged with the secondary device) to the source device, such that the source device may connect to either of the two devices. Further, once a primary device connects to the source device, the primary device may transmit, to the secondary device, connection information such that the secondary device may connect to the source device and operate in the primary role.

Address management for Bluetooth devices

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. Generally, the described techniques provide for initiating, at a first wireless audio device, a handover interval including one or more extended synchronous connection-oriented (eSCO) windows, buffering a set of one or more audio (e.g., microphone) data packets during the handover interval, discarding at least a portion of the set of one or more audio data packets during the handover interval, receiving a handover indication from a second wireless audio device during an extended retransmission portion of a first eSCO window of the handover interval, and transmitting one or more audio data packets during a second eSCO window that is subsequent to the handover interval.

Audio synchronization during handover

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications at a wireless audio device are described. A first (e.g., primary) wireless audio device may initiate a role switch procedure with a second (e.g., secondary) wireless audio device. The first wireless audio device may disable traffic flow between the source device and the first wireless audio device and transmit synchronization information and timing information necessary for taking over the role of primary wireless audio device to the second wireless audio device. The first wireless audio device may transmit a device role switch message, and the first wireless audio device and the second wireless audio device may perform the role switch. After performing the role switch, the first wireless audio device may assume the role of a secondary wireless audio device and the second wireless audio device may assume the role of a primary wireless audio device.

Seamless link transfers between primary and secondary devices

A first Bluetooth audio device paired with a second Bluetooth audio device may coordinate communications between the two BT audio devices. The first Bluetooth audio device may originally communication with the second BT audio device over a first type of Bluetooth connection. When the first Bluetooth audio device determines that the second Bluetooth audio device has left or is close to leaving the range of the first Bluetooth audio device, the first Bluetooth audio device may switch to communicating with the second Bluetooth audio device over a second type of Bluetooth connection or over a wireless mesh network. The first Bluetooth audio device may maintain a Bluetooth connection of the first type with a mobile device regardless of how the first Bluetooth audio device communicates with the second Bluetooth audio device.

Coordination between wireless audio devices

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. One method may include determining that a quality condition of a primary Bluetooth-enabled device is lower than a quality condition of a secondary Bluetooth-enabled device. The primary Bluetooth-enabled device may transmit, to the secondary Bluetooth-enabled device, a handover request message based on the determining. The handover request message may include a subset of connection information associated with a connection between the primary Bluetooth-enabled device and a device in wireless communications with the primary Bluetooth-enabled device. The primary Bluetooth-enabled device may receive, from the secondary Bluetooth-enabled device, a handover response message based on the handover request message. As a result, the primary Bluetooth-enabled device may handover, to the secondary Bluetooth-enabled device, at least one logical transport channel of the set of logical transport channels based on the handover response message.

Generally the described techniques provide for establishing, by a first speaker a control communication link with a second speaker over a first piconet, receiving a signal during an extended synchronous connection-oriented (eSCO) window between a wireless device and the second speaker (e.g., one of a null signal, an acknowledgement (ACK) signal, or a negative acknowledgement (NACK) signal) switching from the second piconet to the first piconet based on the received communication, communicating with the second speaker on the first piconet, and closing the eSCO window based at least in part on the communication.
