A polymer composition is described well suited for being combined with relatively short fibers. The fibers, for instance, can have a mean fiber length of less than 1,000 microns, such as less than 700 microns, such as less than 500 microns. The polymer formulation allows for intimate mixing with the fibers without having to use a sizing agent. In one embodiment, the composition contains a polybutylene terephthalate polymer combined with a thermoplastic polymer having lower crystallinity.

A fiber reinforced polyester polymer composition is disclosed that contains at least one tribological modifier. The tribological modifier may comprise an ultra-high molecular weight silicone alone or in combination with polyytetrafluoroethylene particles. The composition not only has excellent tensile properties but also can produce a low friction surface.

An oil resistant polymer composition is disclosed that contains a thermoplastic elastomer combined with an olefin and vinyl acetate copolymer on an oleophobic agent. In one embodiment, the composition contains a thermoplastic polyester elastomer combined with an ethylene and vinyl acetate copolymer. In order to render the polymer composition oil resistant, the polymer composition can further contain an UHMW silicone, a fluoropolymer, and optionally a crosslinking agent and/or an antiplasticizer.

Described are fibers comprising a polyoxymethylene copolymer having an ISO 1133 MVR melt index (determined at 190&#xb0; C. under a load of 2.16 kg) in the range from 0.3 to 30 ml/10 min which possess a bend recovery (measured by the double loop method in air and/or water) of not less than 125&#xb0; C. The invention relates to a process for using nitric acid to oxidize polyarylene sulfide to polyarylene sulfoxide, oxidizing at least 98% of the sulfide groups of the polyarylene sulfide to sulfoxide groups. According to the invention polyarylene sulfide is treated with nitric acid at a concentration of from 60 to 80% with heating. The polyarylene sulfoxide prepared by the novel process can be used as an excellent chemical blowing agent for foaming thermoplastics.

Polyaryiene sulfone fiber material, especially web, is obtained by oxidizing polyarylene sulfide fiber material with a peracid/acid mixture of an organic acid at 60 to 100&deg; C. for 10 seconds to 45 minutes. Since this process provides a substantative degree of oxidation within a very short reaction time, one advantage of the process is that the rapidity of the oxidation renders continuous processes for oxidizing polyarylene sulfide fibers economical.
