A cooling device with variable cooling rate for treating metal materials, in particular for cooling steel sheets in plate mills, hot strip mills or thermal treatment lines, by means of a spray nozzle cooling system. The cooling device consists of at least two cooling bars one of each two cooling bars being situated on the lower side and the other on the upper side transversely to the sheet travel direction of the sheet and centrally between two roller table rollers and includes a spray nozzle cooling system with which a plurality of full jet nozzles and a plurality of full cone nozzles are associated, the full jet nozzles being arranged symmetrically to the full cone nozzles. Cooling bar and cooling process with variable cooling rate for steel sheets

The invention concerns a method for cooling or quenching slabs and sheets () with water in a cooling pond () wherein the slabs and the sheets (), previously set upright by a tilting device (), are lowered and temporarily maintained in position on edge. The inventive method is characterized in that the slabs and the sheets are sprayed with the cooling water. Therefor, the cooling pond () has, on both sides of the lowered slabs and sheets () jet devices () directed towards the surfaces of the large sides of the slabs or sheets and connected to a cooling water circuit which comprises means for reducing the water filling supply from a maximum upper water level () to a lower water level ().

A nozzle beam for descaling or cooling metal strand material, particularly rolling stock, includes an inlet for the product treatment liquid and an additional inlet for a device cooling liquid, an outlet for the device cooling liquid, and a switching member for opening and closing the device cooling liquid outlet. The switching member is automatically switchable through a device cooling liquid pressure which controls the state of operation of the nozzle beam.
