A cold drawn carbon steel filament has a surface with traces of bismuth. The steel filament can be used as a sawing wire or as part of a steel cord. During its manufacturing the steel filament has been subjected to a controlled cooling by bringing the steel filament in contact with bismuth. Bismuth may replace lead without harming the environment.

A steel filament adapted for the reinforcement of elastomer or for thermoplastic products has a carbon content ranging up to 0.20 per cent by weight. The steel filament is provided with a coating promoting the adhesion with elastomer or thermoplastic products. The steel filament is drawn until a final diameter of less than 0.60 mm and a final tensile strength of more than 1200 MPa. Intermediate heat treatments are avoided so that the carbon footprint of the steel filament is substantially reduced.

A steel cord comprises a metal core strand and adjacent layer of steel elements. Between the metal core strand and adjacent layer of steel elements, a polymer layer with a minimum thickness of more than 0.02 mm is provided. These steel cords are to be used to reinforce off-the-road tires or conveyor belts.

A steel cord comprises a core with one or more core steel filaments and further comprises a first layer of intermediate steel filaments twisted around the core, and a second layer of second steel filaments twisted around the first layer. The polymer reduces the fretting between the coated intermediate steel filaments and the other steel filaments and makes the steel cord suitable for reinforcement of carcass plies of a tire.

Steel cord includes a first group and a second group. The second group is helically twisted around the first group with a cord twisting step. At least one of the second filaments is polygonally performed in order to allow rubber penetration.
