The present invention relates to a novel compound S-(&#x2212;)-1-{4-[2-(allyloxy)-ethyl] phenoxy}-3-isopropylamino propan-2-ol of formula 1 and to a process for the preparation thereof. More particularly the present invention relates to a process for preparing S-(&#x2212;)-1-{4-[2-(allyloxy)-ethyl]phenoxy}-3-isopropylamino propan-2-ol of formula 1 by selective allylation of p-hydroxy phenyl ethanol. The present invention also relates to a process for conversion thereof to S-(&#x2212;)-betaxolol of formula 2
