A VCOM generator circuit generates a VCOM signal for an electronic display. The VCOM circuit includes an operational amplifier having reduced supply rails. In an implementation, the VCOM circuit has at least three supply rails, AVDD, ground or GND, and VP or VN, or both. VP is less than AVDD and greater than VN. VN is higher than ground and below VP. The VCOM circuit with reduced voltage supply rails for VP and VN reduces power consumption of the VCOM op amps. By reducing power consumption, this also reduces the surface temperature of the integrated circuit.

A voltage converter includes a low dropout regulator voltage converter circuit. The voltage converter generates three voltages (e.g., 1.2 volts, 2.5 volts, and 1.8 volts) for an electronic system, which can be a smartphone or electronic tablet or other device. An implementation has at least one charge pump voltage converter circuit. The low dropout regulator voltage converter circuit provides an output voltage based on its input voltages and can operate with a very small input-to-output differential voltage. Compared to using a Buck converter, a low dropout regulator does not have an external inductor, which saves space. An implementation of the voltage converter can also include at least one charge pump voltage converter circuit to generate a voltage of the voltage converter.

A voltage converter includes at least one charge pump voltage converter circuit. The voltage converter generates three voltages (e.g., 1.2 volts, 2.5 volts, and 1.8 volts) for an electronic system, which can be a smartphone or electronic tablet or other device. The charge pump voltage converter circuit provides an output voltage that is an average of its input voltages. Compared to a low dropout regulator, charge pump voltage converter circuit has high efficiency. This voltage converter will save power compared to converters using a low dropout regulator. An implementation of the voltage converter can includes at least two charge pump voltage converter circuits to generate to different output voltages.

Floating charge pump voltage converter

An LED lighting device includes multiple luminescent devices driven by a rectified AC voltage. The multiple luminescent devices are turned on flexibly in a multi-stage driving scheme using multiple current controllers. The current settings of the two driving stages with the highest current level and the second highest current level are adjusted according to the variation in the rectified AC voltage Vor according to the variation in the duty cycle of the luminance device due to the variation in the rectified AC voltage. The present invention can improve the line/load regulation of the LED lighting device when the rectified AC voltage somehow fluctuates between its upper bound and lower bound.

Embedded display power management

A boost regulator system for regulating one or more output voltages includes, a first pump element coupled to receive a first input voltage, a first switching device coupled to the first pump element, the first switching device causing a finite amount of energy to be stored in the first pump element in response to a first control signal. The system further includes, a first capacitor coupled to the first pump element and the first switching device, the first capacitor storing the finite amount of energy and generating a first output voltage in response to the finite amount of energy. A boost controller (BC) coupled to receive the first output voltage, the boost controller further configured to regulate the first output voltage by generating the first control signal. The system further includes, a second switching device coupled to a second capacitor, the second switching device further causing a second voltage to develop across the second capacitor in response to a second control signal, a third capacitor coupled to the first pump element and the second switching device, the third capacitor further generating a third output voltage in response to the finite amount of energy, and a linear controller (LC) coupled to receive the third output voltage, the BC further configured to regulate the third output voltage by generating the second control signal.

Regulation scheme for a charge pump

A switching voltage regulator includes, in part, N output stages, a loop ADC, a multiplexer, a current ADC, and an interrupt block. The loop analog-to-digital converter receives the N output voltages each of which is associated with one of N channels. The loop ADC is adapted to vary a duty cycle of N signals each applied to one of the N output stages that generate the N output voltages. The interrupt block is adapted to enable the multiplexer to couple an output stage to the current ADC if a difference between voltages sensed at an output stage during at least two sampling times exceeds a predefined threshold value. The interrupt block may also be adapted to enable the multiplexer to couple an output stage to the current ADC block if a difference between a voltage sensed at the output stage and a reference voltage exceeds a predefined threshold value.

A smart talk mechanism provides feedback information from a driver to a DC-to-DC converter, enabling the DC-to-DC converter to adjust an input voltage for at least one illumination source backlighting the display for increasing the power efficiency.

Smart talk backlighting system and method

A switching regulator target voltage is adjusted to a first value corresponding to a pre-charge voltage that is present at a regulator output terminal. The switching regulator responds to a comparison signal resulting from a comparison of the target voltage and a feedback voltage. When the switching regulator is on, the target voltage is adjusted to a second value corresponding to a nominal regulator output voltage. In one embodiment, a synchronous switch is disabled when a lockout circuit receives a disable signal. The lockout circuit is unlocked when an enable signal is provided by a switching controller.

Apparatus for and method of adjusting a switching regulator output for a circuit having a pre-charge voltage

Switching circuits including DC:DC converters of various topologies are provided with a soft-start mechanism that ensures safe start-up operation. The mechanism causes the converter switches to be driven such that on-impedance is increased during at least a portion of the time the switches are turned on. Increased on-impedance condition is invoked during power-up, and/or no-load or light-load condition. The increased on-impedance temporarily reduces output voltage and/or drive current provided by the converter.

Power-up and no-load/light load protective mechanisms for DC:DC converters

The output-side referenced pulse width modulator (PWM) in an isolation-providing voltage converter receives at least initial bias voltage (Vbias) from a charge-pump like Vbias generator. The Vbias generator includes an input-side referenced periodic waveform generator whose output signal can be amplified differentially with an input-side referenced circuit and then AC-coupled via isolation-maintaining capacitors to an output-side referenced rectifier circuit whose output is Vbias. The Vbias thus generated can power the PWM at least from power-up through commencement of steady-state operation, when a more robust Vbias can be derived from the output-side voltage itself. Since the PWM is output-side referenced, high feedback bandwidth is maintained.

Method and circuit to bias output-side width modulation control in an isolating voltage converter system

A switching power supply produces a regulated output voltage. An output inductor is connected at one end to a power switch circuit having a duty cycle. The other end of the output inductor has a regulated output voltage. A voltage feedback circuit produces a voltage feedback signal representative of the regulated output voltage. A current feedback circuit produces a composite signal representative of inductor current, the composite signal having an ac component and a dc component. An error amplifier produces an error signal representative of the difference between a reference voltage and the voltage feedback signal. A pulse width modulator comparator compares the error signal to a composite signal representing a summing of the voltage feedback signal with a current sensing signal representative of output inductor current, the composite signal having an ac component and a dc component. The comparator output results in a gate drive signal that controls the duty cycle of the power switch circuit to maintain the regulated output voltage.
