A method for vital sign monitoring using a radar sensor system that includes a transmitter, a receiver, and processing device. The transmitter irradiates a body region of a person with radar radiation, the receiver generates a receiver signal from reflected radiation from the body region, and the processing device generates, for each of a plurality of processing windows, a displacement signal based on the receiver signal. The displacement signal characterizes a body motion having, as oscillating motions, a breathing motion and a heartbeat motion, and calculates an estimated fundamental frequency for at least one oscillating motion. The processing device applies an adaptive Nonlinear Least Squares method to calculate a plurality of frequency estimates, each of which corresponds to one of a plurality of harmonics of a first oscillating motion, wherein the processing device calculates a first estimated fundamental frequency for the first oscillating motion based on the frequency estimates.

Automotive microwave lens device for generation of heart-shaped radiation pattern in interior car sensing applications

A radar sensor system and method for ascertaining whether an unattended child is present within an automotive vehicle. The radar sensor system carries out the method and includes a transmitter, at least one sensor, and processing circuitry. The method includes the steps of: illuminating at least one occupiable position within the vehicle with radiation of multiple frequencies; generating radar sensor signals from reflections of the transmitted radiation, a plurality of the radar sensor signals corresponding to different frequencies; and operating the processing circuitry for generating and determining if a first indicator value indicative of motion in the occupiable position satisfies a first predetermined criteria and, if so, generating and determining a second indicator value indicating a degree of repetitive pattern within the radar sensor signals, and determining presence of an unattended child in the vehicle if the second indicator value satisfies a second predetermined criteria.

Method and system for unattended child detection

A method of operating a radar sensor system that is configured to determine range and velocity information from radar waves reflected by a scene in an interior of a vehicle for vital sign detection. The method includes steps to decompose reflected and received signals into range and velocity information, to measure the movement over time in specified range gates and to evaluate the similarities between them. Based on the characteristics of similar behaving range bins, it can be decided whether any detected movement is related to an internal or external disturbance or by vital signs.

Method of operating a radar sensor system for vital sign detection with elimination of signals excited by interfering movements

A radar sensor system and a method for detecting an occupancy in an interior of a vehicle and with vital sign monitoring. The radar sensor system includes a radar transmitting unit, a radar receiving unit and a signal processing and control unit. The method includes: transmitting a radar wave towards a scene within the vehicle interior, receiving at least one radar wave that has been generated by reflection of the transmitted radar wave, decomposing the received radar wave into range, Doppler and angular information, quantifying and tracking a movement in each region of interest by angular gating and range gating, detecting and monitoring vital signs of occupants in each region of interest, and determining whether quantified and tracked movements in the scene are related to an occupant or to external or internal disturbances, based on a fulfillment of at least one predefined condition concerning the and/or the detected vital signs.
