An underwater turbine apparatus includes a nacelle, containing a generator; a rotor connected to a first end of the nacelle and in communication with the generator to cooperate therewith to convert kinetic energy to electrical energy; a float connected to the nacelle; and a stabilizer connected to the nacelle; a tower connected to the nacelle by a joint; a base supporting the tower; an auger protruding from the underside of the base; and a motor for driving the auger, operable to drill the auger into engagement with an installation surface for the underwater turbine. A method for installing an underwater turbine apparatus includes rotating an auger, on the underwater turbine apparatus, to engage a seafloor.

Underwater turbine apparatus and method

An airborne surveillance platform supporting optoelectronic and electronic sensors, including level sensors, is automatically stabilized in a horizontal plane by varying the length of two tethers out of three. Error signals from the level sensors are transmitted over a wireless link to control components on a rotating platform on the host vehicle, which automatically vary the length of tethers. Applications include images of the surrounding terrain generated by a video camera and a thermal imager in military, police and civil emergency operations.

Airborne, tethered, remotely stabilized surveillance platform

The invention relates to means and methods for maintaining a gutter assembly either in the upward, rain-gathering position or in the downward position under the eaves, where it can be cleaned with a water jet. In the downward position, the gutter assembly remains protected from snow and ice sliding from the roof. Brackets fixated to magnetic latches attached to the fascia support the gutter. Closed magnetic latches maintain the gutter assembly in the upward position. Open magnetic latches maintain the gutter assembly in the downward position. Transition from the upward to the downward position, or vice versa, is achieved from the ground by means of a hook and a U-shaped fork attached to a pole. If the gutter is left in the upward position in winter, snow and ice sliding from the roof will push it to the downward position without damaging it.

Pivoting gutter assembly supported by magnetic latches

An object locating system detects the presence of an object as it passes through a planar fields of view. A pair of optical sensor arrays with multiple, directed, pixel detectors observe the object from two angles as the object passes through the field of view. The location of penetration of the field of view is calculated by triangulation. Using this data, the known location of the take-off point and/or the delay between the departure of an object from the known take-off point and the penetration of the field of view, the trajectory of the object in time and space is calculated. In an alternate embodiment, the take-off point is not known and a plurality of pairs of optical sensor arrays may measure the trajectory of an object as it travels between a launch location and a target location. Applications include projecting the range of a driven golf ball, measuring the respective arriving and departing velocities of a hit baseball, determining the trajectory of a baseball, and determining the trajectory and origin of an arriving projectile, as in the case of the threat to a military vehicle.

Method and apparatus for locating the trajectory of an object in motion

An object locating system detects the presence of an object as it passes through two consecutive planar fields of view. Two pairs of optical sensor arrays with multiple, directed, pixel detectors observe the object from two angles as the object passes through each consecutive field of view. The locations of penetrations of the respective fields of view are calculated by triangulation. Using this data, the known location of the take-off point and/or the delay between penetrations, the trajectory of the object in time and space is calculated. Applications include projecting the range of a driven golf ball, measuring the respective arriving and departing velocities of a hit baseball, and determining the trajectory and origin of an arriving projectile, as in the case of the threat to a military vehicle.

A fluid flow meter using a pair of temperature-variable resistance elements as detectors. Both elements are exposed to the fluid flow and supplied with a series of current pulses. The pulses supplied to one element, the reference element, are of very short duration so as to have no appreciable heating effect; the pulses supplied to the other element are of longer duration and are controlled so as to maintain this element at a fixed temperature differential above the other element, which remains at fluid temperature. The pulse width of the longer duration pulses is a measure of the flow rate of the fluid. Since the relationship between heat dissipated in the element and fluid flow varies with fluid temperature, the voltage pulses across the reference element are used as a measure of fluid temperature to compensate for this variation in calculating the exact fluid flow rate.

Non-obstructive thermodynamic fluid flow meter

An acoustic fluid velocity measuring system includes mutually perpendicular arms disposed in the direction of the rectangular components of the fluid velocity, with each arm supporting two transmitting and two receiving electro-acoustic transducers. Pulses of ultrasonic energy are transmitted and received in and against the direction of fluid flow. The transducers in each arm are arranged in separate electrical loops, each of which provides an output at a different frequency. The frequencies are compared to measure fluid speed and direction which appear on a digital display. The measurements are independent of ambient temperature and the transducers are heated so that the system operates under ice forming meteorological conditions.
