There are provided fluid compositions with particulate solid materials dispersed therein which are characterized by exceptionally low settling tendencies of the dispersed particles. Such compositions containing particulate ferromagnetic solids are useful as magnetorheological fluids.

Synthetic resins suitable for use in the preparation of baking varnishes are prepared by copolymerizing a vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon, an ester of an alpha, beta-unsaturated monocarboxylic such as an acrylate and an alpha, beta-unsaturated, dicarboxylic acid, such as maleic acid, in solution or dispersion, the carboxyl groups of which being esterified with alcohols, etc. to yield a half-ester copolymer and reacted with alkylene oxides to a low residual acid number after which the solution or dispersion is adjusted with regard to acid number through the addition of phosphoric acid.

Cold-set lacquers are prepared by emulsifying acrylate monomers with 1 to 10 percent by weight of a cold cross-linkable comonomer in water, polymerizing, and adding to the resultant polymer dispersion, a dispersion of 3 to 15 percent by weight, based on the solids content of the polymer dispersion, of a water-soluble polyamino-amide and, optionally, usual additives. The lacquers give coatings which have good gloss and hardness and are at the same time water-resistant.

Novel powder coating compositions consisting of resinous polyhydroxyl compounds as film-forming agents, a cross-linking agent, an activator, and conventional additives are described. In contrast to the known powder coating compositions, the activator rather than cross-linking agent is blocked. The novel cross-linking agents employed are bisazlactones. Activators for use in cross-linking reactions are strong acids which are blocked, i.e they are employed in the form of their thermolabile esters or amine salts. The powder coating compositions of this invention are storable and they can be baked at predetermined temperatures to provide high gloss and elastic coatings.

This invention describes a process for the production of a single-component resin powder useful in electrostatic spray coating processes by the formation of partially esterified and alkoxylated copolymers obtained through the reaction of vinyl-aromatic hydrocarbons with alpha, beta-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydrides which are subsequently half-esterified and thereafter the resultant carboxyl group of which is alkoxylated with C.sub.2 to C.sub.4 alkene oxides. Said copolymer is reacted with a monoblocked diisocyanate between 110.degree. and 130.degree.C in the melt form until said single-component resin powder is formed.
