The invention discloses a gun barrel with a novel pattern of a rifling curve. The latter proceeds at start of motion from the parabolic curve y=A+Bx+Cx.sup.2 and is supplemented with a constant D, to which is added a freely selectable exponent =d. Due to the freely selected exponent as parameter the ridge force maximum can be displaced at almost equal level between the start of motion and the barrel mouth. At the barrel mouth the ridge force drops to a minimum.

Gun barrel construction

A method for increasing the hitting probability of multi-barreled machine weapons, especially for four-gun or gatling-type weapon systems. Through a spreading apart of the middle of hitting point locations of the individual weapon barrels, there can be achieved an improvement in the characteristics of the firing spread. This is attained in that the middle hitting point location of the individual weapon barrels is spread apart in such a manner about the middle hitting point location of all of weapon barrels of a weapon system, that the density of hits remains almost constant at a restrictedly increasing deviation from the middle of the hitting point location of all the weapon barrels. The middle hitting point location of the individual weapon barrels can be spread apart by the amount of the average standard deviation of the diring spread of the individual weapon barrels from the middle hitting point location of all weapon barrels of a weapon system.

Method for increasing the hitting probability of multi-barrel machine

A fin-stabilized projectile for weapons selectively possessing either a smooth, and in particular, a rifled weapon barrel, which possesses a discardable thrust ring constituted of segments arranged on the central form-fitted component, and of a through-sliding guide band, and which is provided at the tail end of the projectile with a multi-finned stabilizing guidance mechanism which is rotatable about the longitudinal axis of the projectile.

Fin-stabilized projectile

A projectile particularly for use in rapid fire weapons and high performance guns comprises a hollow projectile body having an exterior surface with an annular groove therearound and with a plurality of openings formed in the groove at spaced circumferential locations. A rotating band is positioned in the groove and secured against displacement caused by centrifugal and accelerating forces, portions of the band which extend through the openings. The band is advantageously injection molded directly in the groove so that portions thereof form into the openings and extend through the openings and form a closed ring on the interior of the shell of the projectile body.

A projectile comprises a tubular body and a sabot or impact base connected to the rear portion. The tubular body is connected to the sabot by radially extending pins, and the rear face of the body is spaced from a circular shoulder of the sabot by a distance equal to, or larger than, the diameter of the pins. To ensure a transfer of the spin of the sabot to the body, the rear face of the body is provided with a corrugation, such as teeth, or a knurling, which, at the discharge and after the pins are sheared off, digs into the surface of the circular shoulder.

Projectile having a tubular body

A rotating band of projectiles is made of a compound sleeve bearing material. The compound material comprises a carrier material and a porous slide layer applied thereto and having pores filled with a polytetrafluoroethylene mixture. The outer surface of the slide layer is coated with a cover layer of a polytetrafluoroethylene mixture. The rotating band is held in place in the groove by a latching connection.

Rotating band for projectiles

A projectile particularly for automatic firearms in high performance machine guns comprises a cylindrical projectile body which has an annular groove around its circumference with rib portions extending radially outwardly of the bottom of the groove which are of radial extent no greater than the outer surface of the projectile body. The groove has end walls which are substantially perpendicular to the exterior surface of the body. A plastic rotating band has its inner periphery anchored in the groove with the rib portions extending to receiving recesses or grooves of the band. The ribs are advantageously radially extending elements which have their outer ends bent in axial directions and they are arranged so that there are portions of the groove of the body on each side thereof. In accordance with the method of manufacturing a projectile body, a form tool is used to effect the recessing of the projectile body or jacket to produce the intermediate ribs which are of substantially rectangular cross section. Thereafter the ribs are bent in a desired direction under a pressure application while simultaneously producing knurls or a roughened surface on the ribs. Thereafter the rotating band is formed in the groove and projects outwardly from the surface of the projectile body. The band is formed by injecting a preferably fiber filled sooth pigmented plastic into the projectile body grooves and around the ribs which are formed in the groove.

Method of making projectile

A projectile, comprises, an outer metallic hollow shell body and a shell core (for example hard metal or heavy metal) disposed in the body having a first cylindrical front portion and a rear portion having a lesser diameter than the front portion. A pyrophoric material liner is disposed on and secured to the rear portion and it is dimensioned such that its outer surface does not project outwardly beyond the surface of the front portion. The liner advantageously comprises a hollow cylinder or a plurality of hollow cylinders, or it may comprise individual strips arranged circumferentially around the rear portion. It is made of pyrophoric material which may comprise a single material or a plurality of different materials of different nature. It is secured to the shell core by press-fitting, cementing or screwing.
