Shaped articles made of brittle material having a low coefficient of thermal expansion, for example designed as glass or glass-ceramic plates, are typically encapsulated with a holding frame made of plastic, which is produced by directly encapsulating the edges of the shaped article with plastic by injection moulding. In order to avoid stress concentrations in the shaped article, which inevitably form as a consequence of the differences in thermal expansion and the material-dependent shrinkage behaviour, according to the invention shrinkage-absorbing elements are embedded between the holding frame and the shaped article, which elements additionally ensure a permanently elastic bearing of the shaped articles when used in practice and provide sufficient sealing during use.

The invention is directed to a method of producing a chemically pretensioned glass body. In the method, a glass body is provided having a composition in percent by weight on oxide basis: SiO.sub.2 70-85; B.sub.2 O.sub.3 8-15; Na.sub.2 O 1-5; K.sub.2 O 1-&lt;5; Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 1-5; MgO 0-3; SrO+BaO 0-2; CaO 0-3; ZnO 0-3; with CaO+ZnO 2-6; and, ZrO.sub.2 0-3.5. The glass body is placed in an ion exchange salt bath containing at least 90% by weight of potassium salts. The salt bath is maintained at a temperature below the transformation point Tg of the glass defined by the glass composition for a duration of at least 2.0 hr causing potassium ions from the salt bath to migrate into the surface region of the glass body to thereby produce the chemically pretensioned glass body.

A heat-insulating viewing window or door for an apparatus has an inner temperature in a cavity of the apparatus which deviates from the temperature of the ambient in which the apparatus operates. The viewing window is especially for cooking or baking ovens or dryers. The viewing window includes an arrangement of plates positioned at spacings from each other and held in a common frame. The plates can be made of glass, glass ceramic or another transparent temperature-resistant material. At least one further plate is mounted between the plate subjected to the ambient temperature and the plate subjected to the temperature of the interior cavity of the apparatus.

In a window for ovens, in particular household baking ovens, with a window structure that consists of several panes (10, 28, 32), at least one of the panes (28) is angled in comparison to the other panes (10, 32). Because of this a lower outer surface temperature results on the outer pane (32) of the multiple pane arrangement turned away from the oven inner chamber (12) with elevated temperature. The frame (16, 34) of the multiple pane arrangement can also have openings (36) on the top and bottom in the area between the outside pane (32) and the center pane (28). In combination with this measure, which permits convection of the outside air through the outer pane intermediate space (arrows 38), an additional reduction of the temperature of the outer pane (32) can be achieved. This air convection can be increased by the fact that the angled center pane (28) converges toward the outer pane (32) at the top.

The invention offers a simple and economical mounting possibility for gas burners in molded parts made of a brittle-friable material, such as glass, glass-ceramic or ceramic, by means of which gas burners can be mounted without stresses, in a leakage-proof and gastight fashion in cooking surfaces of such a material without having to impose a restriction as to a special appliance and/or a specific burner type. The molded part which is made of the brittle-friable material, is the sole support for the gas burners, however, if the molded part breaks, the gas burners will drop onto a lower metal support so that the gas feed lines do not rupture.
