A process is disclosed for preparing alkyltetrahydroanthrahydroquinones in a solvent system suitable for the production of hydrogen peroxide. The resulting alkyltetrahydroanthrahydroquinone solutions can be used directly as working solutions for preparing H.sub.2 O.sub.2 by the anthraquinone process. It is also possible, if desired, to isolate the alkyltetrahydroanthrahydroquinones from the solution, or to oxidize the alkyltetrahydroanthrahydroquinones with an oxygen-containing gas to the corresponding alkyltetrahydroanthraquinones, which can then be isolated.

The present invention provides a process for the preparation of alkyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydroanthrahydroquinones, wherein an alkylanthraquinone is hydrogenated with a catalyst which consists of an organic polymer to which a metal of the noble metal or platinum metal group is bound coordinatively or covalently.
