A method of closing a canal which has been formed in a wall of a component such as a heat exchanger for rocket combustion chamber walls comprises inserting an elongated filler into the canal so as to leave at least one end of the filler which projects out of the canal, filling the remaining space with an electrically conducting melting substance such as a wax, engaging the projecting end of the filler to pull it out of the substance in the canal and to leave the expanding chamber in the substance, an electroplating metalloplastic material onto the component to form a cover over the canal and the substance therein. Electroplating can be carried out without causing any heat which is produced thereby to affect an expansion in the canal which would disturb the electroplating or the formation of the component.

Method of producing closed canals in components such as heat exchangers

A solar pumping system, comprises, a pumping housing which defines a pump chamber therein which is adapted to be positioned in the ground below ground water level. Displacer means in the form of, for example, a bladder, arranged within the pump chamber, is capable of displacing liquid out of the pump chamber in response to a pressurized medium acting thereon to expel the water out of the chamber and up to a level above the ground for use. A suction valve connected into the chamber permits the ground water to flow into the chamber and a discharge valve connected out of the chamber permits the outflow of the ground water during the action of the displacer means. The construction includes a solar collector having at least one hydride conduit which is adapted to be exposed to the sun for solar heating to act on the hydride to cause hydrogen to be formed, the pressure of which acts against the displacer means to displace the ground liquid out of the pump chamber. When the solar collector is shielded and the hydride is permitted to cool or is cooled rapidly by the circulation of water thereover, the pressure of the generated hydrogen decreases, permitting ground water to enter into the pumping chamber once again through the suction valves.

A solar-thermal power plant, comprises an open air circuit wherein the eftive heat obtained from solar energy is supplied to the air current between a compressor and an expansion machine. The construction includes a solar heater which is exposed directly to solar radiation and which is traversed by the air current and provides a means for the direct solar heating of the air current which is conveyed from the compressor to the expansion machine.

A method of manufacturing a regeneratively cooled rocket combustion chamber which includes a thrust nozzle portion connected to a combustion chamber portion and which is constructed with cooling channels which extend in the longitudinal direction between an inner shell or wall having a smooth interior surface and an outer shell or wall and which are laterally bounded by radially extending webs, comprises forming the inner shell along with the cooling channel webs by electrodepositing metal on an electroplating core which is made up of chemically dissolvable material and has its outside contour conformable to the inside contour of the inner wall of the combustion chamber which is provided with radially extending projections forming mold blades for the webs defining the lateral boundaries of the cooling channels. Thereafter, the cooling channels are filled with a multiple electrically well-conducting filling material up to the level of the outer ends of the webs after these outer ends have been finish turned. A metal layer is then electrodeposited around the complete periphery of the web end faces and over the periphery of the cooling channels to form the outer shell or wall. The filling material is then melted out of the cooling channels and the electroplating core is hollowed out except for some millimeters of residual wall thickness and the remnant of the core is dissolved along with the radial projections to form the slots between the cooling channel webs which open into the center of the combustion chamber. The entire electrodeposited rocket combustion chamber is then engaged over the finishing mandrel and while it is on the mandrel, the cooling channels are deformed by applying pressure from inside the channels to close the slot which extends between the webs. When the thrust nozzle portion is formed integrally with the combustion chamber, the mandrel is transversely parted in the nozzle throat plane to permit insertion during the deforming of the cooling channels.
