A first stream of a polyester melt is divided into a second and a third polyester stream, the flow rate of the first stream being 100 to 2000 kg/h and the flow rate of the second polyester stream being 5 to 300 kg/h. 0.2 to 100 kg/h of a molten additive polymer is metered to the second polyester stream, and the additive polymer together with the second polyester stream is passed through a first mixing line. There is obtained a first polymer mixture whose content of additive polymer is 3 to 50 wt-%. The first polymer mixture is introduced into the third polyester stream, the first mixture together with the third polyester stream being passed through a second mixing line and forming a second polymer mixture. The second polymer mixture is extruded to obtain filaments, the filaments are cooled and combined to threads, the threads are unwound with a speed of at least 1000 m/min. The threads are processed to obtain either continuous threads or staple fibers.

A process of producing a synthetic ultrafine endless yarn on the basis of polyester or polyamide in the range from 0.25 to 0.9 denier per POY filament by melt spinning at draw-off speeds between 2000 and 6000 m/min with a high spinning safety. To the polyester or polyamide a second immiscible amorphous polymer may be added in an amount of 0.05 to 5 wt %. One feature of the invention is the adjustment of a balanced temperature profile in the cross-section of the filament bundle before reaching the draft zone, as well as the suitable adaptation between snap-back length and the draft point of the filaments in the quench duct.

Process for processing polymer mixtures to filaments

Filaments emerging from the nozzle plate of a spinneret are cooled by being passed through a cooling channel. The motion of the filaments through the cooling channel serves to suck-in air through an air inlet arrangement of the cooling channel. The air inlet arrangement includes an upper air inlet which sucks-in air at the underside of the nozzle plate, so that the filaments are contacted by the cooling air immediately upon emerging from the nozzle plate. Contact of the cooling air with the filaments (which are drawn off at a speed of at least 2400 m/min) takes place throughout the length of the cooling channel.

High quality yarns having a low break elongation are obtained by maintaining the feed roll system at a constant temperature T.sub.E =(T.sub.G -20.degree. C.) to (T.sub.G +65.degree. C.), wherein T.sub.G is the temperature of the glass transition point. Filaments are passed over a roll system disposed between the feed roll system and the draw roll system and driven at a peripheral speed between that of the feed roll and draw roll systems. The filaments are passed over the roll system a maximum of three turns.
