A display device, in particular for a vehicle, having a screen which has a liquid crystal cell, with the liquid crystal cell having a front and a rear cell wall and a liquid crystal substance arranged in the cell space between these cell walls, and having a heating apparatus by which the display device can be heated. In order to ensure reliable operation of the display device even at low temperatures, the heating apparatus is arranged in the cell space of the liquid crystal cell directly or indirectly on the front and/or, on the rear cell wall, and that the heating apparatus is operated with a pure AC voltage.

In a liquid crystal display ( ), a laterally arranged light coupling surface ( ) permits the active illumination of the liquid crystal display ( ) by a light source ( ). For this purpose, the liquid crystal display ( ) has a light deflecting element ( ) which deflects the incident optical radiation in the direction of a liquid crystal cell ( ). The light polarized by means of a rear polarization filter ( ) is reflected at a rear, reflective element ( ) and deflected into the liquid crystal cell ( ). The segmented display is therefore produced on a front side ( ) of the liquid crystal display ( ), provided with a front polarization filter ( ). By contrast with known liquid crystal displays having a transflector, it is thereby possible substantially to reduce a possible color deviation and the limited readability associated therewith. At the same time, the cost of production and the overall space required are substantially reduced.

A display device, in particular for a vehicle, has a viewing screen including a liquid crystal cell, the liquid crystal cell having a front cell wall and a rear cell wall and a liquid crystal substance arranged in the cell space between these cell walls, and with a heating device by means of which the display device can be heated. In order to ensure reliable operation of the display device even in the case of low temperatures, the heating device is arranged in the cell space of the liquid crystal cell directly or indirectly on the front cell wall and/or the rear cell wall.

In a display device having a TN liquid crystal cell which can be illuminated by transmitted light from a source of light, the nematic liquid crystal substance of which cell contains a coloring substance. The control regions of the TN liquid crystal cell can be acted on by an actuation voltage between an actuation level and a non-actuation level of the electro-optic characteristic curve, in which connection bright signs can be shown on a dark display surface by the liquid crystal cell. The liquid crystal cell can be acted on by an actuation voltage between the actuation level and a non-actuation level in the undershoot region of the characteristic having the least transmission.
