A supercharged internal combustion engine has cylinder groups with plural cylinders and plural exhaust gas turbochargers. Exhaust gas can be fed to at least one first exhaust gas turbocharger from first outlet valves of the cylinders of the first and second cylinder groups via at least one first exhaust manifold. Exhaust gas can be fed to at least one second exhaust gas turbocharger from second outlet valves of cylinders of the first and second cylinder groups via a second exhaust manifold. At low rotational speeds and/or in part load and/or non-steady state operation, exhaust gas can be fed via the first exhaust manifolds that are connected to the first outlet valves per cylinder group to a turbine of the first exhaust gas turbocharger in flows that can be divided in the inflow region of the turbine, while the second exhaust gas turbocharger is inactive.

An internal combustion engine with an exhaust gas manifold, an exhaust gas line, an exhaust gas turbocharger, by which the compressor provided to charge combustion air for the internal combustion engine is driven, and a bypass line, which branches from the exhaust gas line and in which a power turbine is arranged, wherein a short-circuit line branches from the bypass line and leads to a section of the exhaust gas line located downstream of the exhaust gas turbocharger. A method for operating an internal combustion engine with compression ignition or with spark ignition as a function of an operating point. A specific residual exhaust-gas quantity in the combustion space is set for compression ignition. The internal combustion engine is operated as a function of the operating point by an outlet cam, by which a first outlet opening phase and a second outlet opening phase take place. The second outlet opening phase commences during an inlet opening phase. At a first operating point in a compression-ignition mode, a residual exhaust-gas quantity in a combustion space is dimensioned as a function of a valve interference set between the inlet and the outlet valve during a charge exchange. At a second operating point in the compression-ignition mode the residual exhaust-gas quantity in the combustion space is dimensioned as a function of a duration of the second outlet opening phase.

Each cylinder () comprises at least one intake opening () for a fresh mixture. Each intake opening () is associated with an intake valve () that works together with an associated valve seat () in order to control the intake opening (). At least one such intake opening () is provided with a guide mask () that laterally encloses the respective valve seat () on a side that is opposite the respective combustion chamber () along a delimited circumferential section. Each intake opening () is associated with an intake canal (). In order to improve the operation of the internal combustion engine (), at least one intake canal () leading to a masked intake opening () is associated with an additional valve () for controlling the intake canal ().

A process for starting a direct-injecting internal-combustion engine is disclosed. The process includes triggering a separate drive for adjusting the camshaft for causing an angular position change between the crankshaft and the camshaft until the separate drive rotates the crankshaft such that a working medium is compressed by a piston in a cylinder of the internal-combustion engine. The position of the pistons of the internal-combustion engine is determined by using position determining devices to identify the cylinder of the internal-combustion engine in which the working medium is compressed. Fuel is injected into the cylinder in which the working medium is compressed when the cylinder is in a proximity of an upper dead center to start the internal-combustion engine.

Process and system for starting a direct-injecting internal-combustion engine as well as motor vehicle

An internal combustion engine with a plurality of cylinders, which are each assigned an inlet valve, an outlet valve and a combustion space, with an inlet camshaft connected to a camshaft adjuster, with an outlet camshaft connected to a camshaft adjuster, with a switchable inlet-valve drive which has a plurality of inlet cams for actuating the respective inlet valve, with a switchable outlet-valve drive which has a plurality of outlet cams for actuating the respective outlet valve, and with an exhaust-gas system. The internal combustion engine is operated with compression ignition or with spark ignition as a function of the operating point. For this purpose, for the compression ignition, a specific residual exhaust-gas quantity is set in the combustion space. Furthermore, the internal combustion engine is operated as a function of the operating point by means of an outlet cam.

A valve drive of an internal combustion engine, with a camshaft including cams for actuating gas-exchange valves, wherein at least one cam, which includes several cam faces, is guided nonrotatably but with freedom of axial movement on the camshaft; wherein a stroke profile, which cooperates with an actuating pin for the axial displacement of the cam or cam piece, is assigned to the associated axially displaceable cam or an axially displaceable cam piece comprising several cams; and wherein the stroke profile of the axially displaceable cam or cam piece in question includes intersecting stroke curves. A valve drive of an internal combustion engine with a camshaft including cams for actuating gas-exchange valves, wherein at least one cam, comprising several cam faces, is guided nonrotatably but with freedom of axial movement on the camshaft, wherein a stroke profile, which cooperates with an actuating pin for the axial displacement of the cam, is assigned to the associated axially displaceable cam, and wherein the stroke profile of the axially displaceable cam in question comprises several stroke curves. In a method for diagnosing a charge cycle valve stroke adjusting system of an internal-combustion engine having at least one exhaust gas sensor which supplies an output signal continuously varying with an exhaust gas constituent, the spread width of the output signal is determined, and compared with a reference value. Defects of the valve stroke adjusting system are detected on the basis of the comparison.

Method and control device for diagnosing a charge cycle valve stroke adjusting system of an internal-combustion engine

A process for controlling an internal combustion engine, whereby the internal combustion engine is equipped with a device to change a valve timing. To permit a change in the valve timing only when it is necessary for the operation of the internal combustion engine, a transmission, connected at the end of the internal combustion engine, is monitored as to whether a shift operation is taking place in the transmission. If such a shift operation is recognized, a change in the valve timing is suppressed.

Method for control of an internal combustion engine with a variable valve control

A cylinder head for a valve-controlled internal combustion engine with a cylinder head housing, in which there are bearing blocks for the inlet or outlet camshaft. At least one camshaft has a camshaft adjuster, by way of which the position of the drive wheel of the camshaft can be changed relative to the axis of rotation of the camshaft. At least the bearing block, which is provided next to the camshaft adjuster and is intended for the camshaft, exhibits a segment, whose width is reduced owing to a recess for the screw connection of the cylinder head housing. The bearing site, arranged next to the camshaft adjuster, provides a bearing sleeve for the camshaft, in such a manner that the segment of the bearing block that is provided with a reduced bearing block width is expanded to the actual bearing block width. The sleeve exhibits openings to supply oil for the camshaft adjuster. Force-fed oil can be fed to the camshaft adjuster by way of the bearing sleeve over the bearing block, which is arranged next to the camshaft adjuster, despite the bearing block's recesses, which reduce its bearing width.

Cylinder head for a valve-controlled internal combustion engine

The invention relates to a method and a device for monitoring the position of a variable valve control. In order to monitor the position of a variable valve control in which the construction expense is reduced, it is proposed to perform a cylinder-specific analysis of the nonuniformity of the rotational speed of the crankshaft and from this to determine the operating state of the valve control, possibly for each cylinder individually.

An internal-combustion engine valve gear has at least two adjacent stroke transmitting elements which, by way of a hydraulically displaceable coupling element, in a coupled position can be displaced with respect to one another and, in the uncoupled position, can be displaced independently of one another. The stroke transmitting elements interact with the cam of a camshaft having different cam paths which interact with different stroke courses with the stroke transmitting elements. In order to avoid undefined switching conditions in the operation of the internal-combustion engine and, during each switching operation have sufficient time for the displacement of the coupling element, this coupling element interacts with a locking element which locks and unlocks the coupling element as a function of the cam path.
