The present invention provides a system with multiple network protocol support. The system includes: a first memory, the first memory comprising program instructions for processing upper and lower layers of the network protocol; a first processor, where the first processor processes the upper layers of the network protocol for a data packet according to the program instructions in the first memory; and a second processor, where the second processor processes lower layers of the network protocol for the data packet according to the program instructions in the first memory. When the network protocol is changed, instructions for the new protocol is fetched from a second memory and placed in the first memory. Thus, the hardware of the system need not be redesigned when changing protocols, and the same on-system unit is used to implement each protocol. This increases flexibility, provides cost effectiveness, and increases the reliability of the system.

System with multiple network protocol support

The present invention provides a method and system for increasing reliability of data packet transmission against impulsive noise in powerline communication systems. The method modulates copies of a data packet on two different frequencies, and transmits the modulated data packets along the powerline. One copy is transmitted shifted in time by at least one bit from the other copy. Thus, when an impulsive noise occurs along the powerline, the bits destroyed in the modulated first copy are different than the bits destroyed in the second copy. In this manner, the remaining bits in the first and second copies can be compared and used to reconstruct the data packet. The reliability of data packet transmission against impulsive noise is increased.

Method and system for increasing reliability of data packet transmission against impulsive noise in powerline communication systems

The present invention provides a method and apparatus for accurate packet time stamping in a network. The apparatus includes a time stamping logic, where the time stamping logic detects when a packet is transmitted or received; and a time source, where time information from the time source is latched when the time stamping logic detects the packet. In the preferred embodiment, the time stamping logic monitors packet traffic on a bus. When the time stamping logic detects a packet, a time stamping signal is generated which latches time information from the time source. The time information may then be used to measure the transmission delay for the packet for synchronizing the clocks at the transmitting and receiving nodes.
