A subcaliber missile to be launched from a barrel, in order to serve as a carrier for satellite missiles of other ejectable bodies, has an envelope divided into two half-shells of tapering configuration which are articulated to the missile bottom and are held together by a missile head and by internal partitions separating the ejectable bodies from one another. When the missile is in flight, the ejection of the head by the detonation of a charge exerts a backward reaction force upon the envelope, causing its load to move forward therein whereby the partitions are disengaged from the two half-shells and allow them to flip apart. The half-shells are provided with slots for a recessed tail-wing assembly and with back fins which, like the missile bottom, conform to the caliber of the barrel.

Carrier missile for ejectable bodies

A versatile carrier projectile for receiving and ejecting differently-sized ejectable payloads such as guided missiles and incendiary bombs is described. The payloads are disposed in successive, longitudinally spaced relation within a central cylindrical body of the projectile, with successive ones of the payloads being separated by a spacer disc. Each spacer disc carries an outwardly biased blocking rod. The outer end of each blocking rod terminates in engagement with a sawtooth-shaped groove on the inner periphery of the cylindrical body, so that the forward propulsion of the successive payloads through the cylindrical body is accomplished under a steady spring load of the blocking member on the inner wall of the cylindrical body. The front and rear portions of the cylindrical body are respectively secured to the shell head and the ignition charge container by shear pins. Other shear pins are provided to secure a drive disc to the rear portion of the ignition charge container, and a flange extending forwardly from the outer surface of the drive disc serves to normally confine the pivoted rear ends of a plurality of stabilizing wings in their retracted position until the projectile exits from the barrel of the firing weapon.

Carrier projectiles for ejectable payloads

A segmented ejectable payload container is arranged to provide improved protection against axial separation of its segments during the firing operation. The container is formed as a hollow shell, with its outer jacket formed integral with a bottom end plate whose outer surface is recessed to receive an outwardly extending flange of an inner container jacket. The other end of the opposed jackets is removably closed by means of a threaded end plate. A second flange on the inner jacket is received in a corresponding recess of the second end plate when such end plate is in operative position. The interfaces between the flanges on the inner jackets and the recesses in the respective end plates are closed by means of a radially disposed seal. The depth of such recesses is chosen so that the outer surface of each end plate projects beyond the adjacent surface of the associated flange.
