A hybrid stent that is defined as having a central section that is balloon expandable and end sections that are self-expanding. The entire stent is mounted on a balloon of a balloon angioplasty catheter. One way to retain the self-expanding portion of the stent onto a balloon onto which it has been nested is to place a cylindrical elastomer tube around each of the self-expanding end sections of the stent. Another way to retain the hybrid stent onto a stent delivery system is to use a conventional sheath that is pulled back to initiate stent deployment

Stent with self-expanding end sections

The present invention is a hybrid stent that is defined as having a central section that is balloon expandable and end sections that are self-expanding. The entire stent is mounted on a balloon of a balloon angioplasty catheter. One way to retain the self-expanding portion of the stent onto a balloon onto which it has been nested is to place a cylindrical elastomer tube around each of the self-expanding end sections of the stent. A delivery apparatus including an outer sheath, made from an elongated tubular member having distal and proximal ends. The apparatus further includes a self-expanding stent located within the distal end of the sheath along a load area. The stent makes frictional contact with the inner layer of said sheath. Lastly, the apparatus includes a readily removable member or keeper, which is disposed along the outer sheath along at least a portion of the load area. The member has sufficient rigidity to prevent the outer sheath from expanding along the load area prior to delivery of the stent.

Stent keeper for a self-expanding stent delivery system

A composite stent device comprises a shape memory alloy stent sleeve which is treated so that it can exert an outward force on a lumen in which the stent device is to be deployed, and a restraint element which restricts the maximum transverse dimension to which the stent sleeve can expand outwardly. The restraint sleeve can minimize damage to a lumen by a stent located within it. It can be arranged to allow the stent device to be deformed in a bending mode, for example when the lumen in which the device is located is subjected to a transverse flattening deformation, relying on the enhanced elastic properties of the shape memory alloy stent sleeve to recover to the open, generally rounded configuration.
