A non-contact temperature measuring system and a dual-reference body structure employed therein is described, wherein a moving object whose temperature is to be determined, is passed by first and second reference bodies having a same form factor with respect to the moving object. Each of the reference bodies has a heat flow sensor embedded at the end of a cavity formed in the reference body such that the heat flow sensor primarily responds to radiation heat flow generated by a temperature differential between the moving object and its respective reference body. With the reference bodies thermally isolated and maintained at different temperatures by heaters embedded in the reference bodies, and their respective heat flow sensors properly calibrated, the temperature of the moving object is calculated, by applying the Stefan-Boltzmann law, from the respective temperatures of the first and second reference bodies, and the respective calibrated output voltages of the respective heat flow sensors of the first and second reference bodies.

Autocalibrating non-contact temperature measuring technique employing

A device for measuring the temperature of an external moving filament is disclosed. The device includes dual thermal sinks or reference bodies; each reference body has two heat flow sensors that are matched in sensitivity and are connected in series. By utilizing dual thermal reference bodies, which are maintained at different temperatures, the device yields the absolute temperature of the filament by measuring the temperatures of the referenced bodies and the heat flow rates between each of the reference bodies and the filament. The device automatically calculates the proportionality constant between the heat flow rates and the temperature differences between the filament and the reference bodies and thus calculates the filament temperature. Each heat flow sensor has a row of sensitive elements or active junction lines that is not parallel to the path of the filament. This orientation of the sensitive elements provides more accurate temperature measurements even when the path of the filament should constantly change.

Autocalibrating dual sensor non-contact temperature measuring device

A method and apparatus for measuring the temperature of an external body is disclosed. The apparatus comprises dual thermal sinks or reference bodies wherein heat flow sensors are mounted. By utilizing dual thermal reference bodies, which are at different temperatures, the method of the invention yields the absolute temperature of the external body by measuring the temperatures of the referenced bodies and the heat flow rates between each of the reference bodies and the external body. The apparatus automatically calculates the proportionality constant between the heat flow rates and the temperature differences between the external body and the reference bodies and thus calculates the external body temperature.

Apparatus and method for determining and tracking dew point temperatures. The dew point is measured by lowering the temperature of a condensing surface that is associated with a heat flow sensor. After condensation occurs the heat flux across the condensing surface is maintained at a preselected value by adjusting the temperature of the condensing surface. As long as a positive heat flow is maintained into the condensing surface, the temperature of the condensing surface is maintained at a slightly lower temperature than the saturation temperature which is by definition the dew point. The dew point temperature calculation is based on the relationship that when condensate forms on the condensing surface, the temperature of the condensing surface approaches the dew point temperature as the heat flow rate across the condensing surface approaches zero, i.e., at adiabatic conditions.

Dew point measuring method and apparatus

A dew point temperature measuring apparatus is positioned in a sample flow channel that withdraws a sample of a gaseous atmosphere within an enclosure for measuring the dew point temperature of the gaseous atmosphere from which its humidity may be determined. The dimensions of the sample flow channel and the velocity of the gas flow past the dew point temperature measuring apparatus is controlled to assure that the flow is laminar in order to avoid unwanted heat transfer between the sample gas and the dew point temperature measuring apparatus. The dew point temperature measuring apparatus includes a pair of sensors positioned side-by-side in a top wall of the sample flow channel.

Dew point measuring apparatus installation system

A microprocessor-based perimeter thermal energy control system regulates heating and cooling in the perimeter area of a building in accordance with instantaneous and integrated heat flow measurements and instantaneous temperature deviation measurements. Control of heat pumps and air conditioning units is provided as is automatic switching between heating and cooling. The inherent thermal parameters of the space are inductively determined and used by the system to continually self-adapt to the heat flow properties of the space. The gain of the heat flow based control system is varied automatically as a function of the deviation between the actual space temperature and the desired set point temperature. Morning recovery is initiated and regulated in response to instantaneous and integrated heat flow measurements and inductively determined thermal space parameters and produces a near linear stepwise change in the temperature of the space from night setback to occupancy temperature.

Building perimeter thermal energy control system

Apparatus for determining the relative humidity of an atmosphere by measuring the dew point of the atmosphere. The dew point is measured by lowering the temperature of a condensing or sensing surface associated with a heat flow sensor. When condensation begins to occur this is detected by the heat flow sensor as a change in the rate of heat flow through the condensing surface. In one embodiment a pair of heat flow sensors are employed, one maintained at a slightly lower temperature than the other. The sensors are connected in series opposition so that output signals due to background or convective heat transfer are cancelled, any change in the combined output signal of the two sensors then indicating heat flow resulting from condensation. The temperature of the cooler face will be the dew point temperature. Two arrangements of sensors are disclosed.

Dew point measuring apparatus

A control apparatus for regulating a building perimeter temperature change system, which may be a heating system, a cooling system, or both. The control apparatus operates in conjunction with a central heating system which operates to adjust temperatures in the building. The building is characterized by net heat gains or losses at the building perimeter. These net heat gains and losses are made up by the building perimeter temperature change system under the regulation of the present control apparatus. The apparatus includes a heat flow sensor for mounting upon an exterior building element to generate a sensor signal proportional to the direction and magnitude of heat flow to or from the building element. A controller responsive to the sensor signal operates the temperature change system so that the rate of perimeter heating or cooling is directly proportional to the measured rate of heat loss or gain through the building element.
