A combustion chamber structure for a rocket engine or the like, has a combustion chamber liner with cooling channels and at least one manifold for feeding and removing a coolant, particularly a cryogenic fuel. The at least one manifold is brazed together with the combustion chamber liner and the area of the combustion chamber liner that is not covered by the at least one manifold is coated with an electroplated structural jacket. The invention also includes a method for manufacturing the combustion chamber structure.

Combustion chamber structure and its manufacturing process

A pipe section, especially an elbow pipe section, is cast to have an internal heat insulation lining so that the pipe section can withstand temperatures up to about 2500.degree. C. The internal heat insulation is first formed as a hollow casting core of carbon fiber composite material which, after curing, is inserted into a casting mold to function as the casting core which then becomes the internal heat insulation of the pipe section as the result of the casting of the pipe section, whereby the carbon fiber composite material is bonded to the interior surface of the pipe section.

Structural parts, particularly of complicated shape, are diffusion welded to each other under isostatic pressure to form permanent joints. A two phase operation is involved in the joint formation. In the first phase at least one of the welding joint forming surfaces of the two parts to be joined, is provided with a material which will form a metallurgical layer in the gap between the two surfaces forming the welding joint. The metallurgical layer forming material may be applied to one or both joint forming surfaces prior to assembly of the parts or the material may be introduced into the gap between the surfaces after the parts have been assembled. In both instances it is the aim to seal the gap prior to the second phase in which a diffusion welding is performed in a hot isostatic press.
