A spark plug for igniting a combustible gas mixture in an internal combustion engine includes an ignition electrode with an electrical supply line is connected thereto. A pipe housing is provided for enclosing the electrical supply line and a venting channel is provided for discharging combustion gases from the pipe housing. The venting channel provides for discharging combustion gases infiltrating the spark plug as leakage gases run along the supply line.

A voltage transformer circuit for supplying ignition power to a spark plug includes a transformer, a primary circuit, and a secondary circuit. The primary circuit is coupled with the secondary circuit via the transformer in order that, when a transistor switch is closed, power is transmitted from the primary circuit into the secondary circuit. The primary circuit includes a discharge path, for demagnetizing the transformer when the transistor switch is open and via which power can be retransmitted from the secondary circuit for shortening the duration of an arc discharge, and the discharge path forms a demagnetizing current with a primary side of the transformer.

Method and device for igniting a combustible gas mixture in a combustion engine

A precombustion chamber ignition device for preferably lean fuel-air mixtures and having a precombustion chamber. This precombustion chamber contains a electrode carrier extending into the precombustion chamber and on it at least one ignition electrode is attached, which has at least one ignition portion, which cooperates with a internal wall surface of the precombustion chamber in defining at least one spark gap extending substantially athwart the longitudinal axis of the precombustion chamber. In this respect the internal wall surface acts as a ground electrode. The ignition portion of the at least one ignition electrode is offset in relation to the longitudinal axis of the precombustion chamber and is arranged essentially parallel to the wall surface, which is substantially cylindrical in the spark gap portion, of the precombustion chamber close to the wall surface. In consequence it is possible for the ignition potential to be reduced and in the case of long term operation for the working life of the precombustion chamber ignition device to be increased. More particularly however the reliability of flaming is a substantially improved in the case of diluted fuel-air mixtures (lean mixtures, recycled exhaust gas ).

A method and a spark plug construction to ignite very lean fuel air mixtures with the aid of an ignition chamber with separate ignition, which is arranged in the main combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine, connected to the main combustion chamber 20 through transfer channels 21. Transfer channels may be provided which proceed tangentially, whereby rich fuel air admixtures or additional fuel is brought, valve timed, to the area of at least one transfer channel 21 outside the ignition chamber through a supply channel 24. During a compression stroke the very lean mixture in the main combustion chamber is pressed into the ignition chamber 16 through the transfer channels, which results in a very good intermixing with the additional fuel or the admixture due to the turbulent movement through the transfer channels 21 and the long path to the spark gap. This guarantees a very safe ignition.
