A connection of an outer sheet metal member with an inner sheet metal member whereby the outer sheet metal member must form an optically smooth surface. For that purpose, the outer sheet metal member is folded over the inner sheet metal member and a welding seam is then made from the folded-over side by means of a low energy welding process, for example, special forms of the protective gas welding or energy beam welding, and more particularly in such a manner that only the folded-over part of the outer sheet metal member and the inner sheet metal member fuse. The non-folded-over side of the outer sheet metal member thereby shows no impairment whatsoever by the welded connection.

An installation for the automatic grinding of surfaces, especially of body surfaces to be painted of a motor vehicle, in which the grinding aggregate is machine-guided and the grinding disk exchange at the grinding aggregate is realized automatically. For that purpose, the installation provides a grinding disk magazine, a container filled with liquid as well as a support plate. Additionally, the grinding aggregate includes within the area of its grinding wheel a clamping mechanism for the grinding disk which is actuatable hydraulically or pneumatically.

Installation for the automatic grinding of curved surfaces

An installation for fastening a grinding sheet on a rotatable grinding disk of a grinding apparatus. The fastening is realized by clamping elements which are rotatably retained with respect to the grinding disk and the grinding apparatus. As a result thereof, the grinding sheet can rotate independently of the grinding disk. Grinding apparatus on which the grinding sheets are secured in the manner described, can be utilized in the automobile industry for rubbing down automobile bodies.

Arrangement for fastening a grinding disk on a rotatable grinding plate

A system for sealing the working vacuum chamber of a charged particle beam machine which is movable with respect to a workpiece is disclosed. The system includes a housing with a central compartment having wire-shaped elements urged against the workpiece to provide a seal therebetween, and lateral compartments, each having a packing of sealing material which is biased against the workpiece surface of a spring arrangement. Rollers and a flexible lip seal arrangement having a flexible sheath of synthetic rubber are also disclosed.

A device for compensating for spurious magnetic fields in an energy beam device includes first and second pairs of electromagnetic poles arranged along the particle path and providing magnetic fields to compensate for spurious magnetic fields which might cause the beam of charged particles to deviate from the desired beam path.

A method and an apparatus for the control of the filler material supply rate in energy beam welding as electron beam welding is disclosed. The width or cross-sectional area of a gap defined by opposed faces of two workpiece parts to be joined is measured by radiation, preferably X-ray radiation, and the rate with which filler material is supplied into a welding zone produced by the energy beam is controlled in proportion to the result of the measurement. The measurement may be made in advance of the welding zone and the control is then delayed by a period of time, which the welding zone takes to arrive at the position of the gap, where the measurement was made.

Method and apparatus for control of method parameters in energy beam

An account is given of a welding pool support device for energy beam welding, with a metal structure, which on a beam outlet side of a welding seam zone of a workpiece system is put against the beam outlet side and being in contact with it by a number of touching points for stopping any movement of melt out of the welding zone, which is achieved by the energy beam in the workpiece system, by a relative movement of the energy beam and the workpiece system, the former going along the weld seam zone. A supporting structure, which is able to be so changed in shape that it takes into account uneven parts of the beam outlet side of the workpiece system in the long direction and also in the cross-direction of the weld seam zone. Furthermore the supporting structure is so designed at the side touching the beam outlet side that the distances between the points of touching from each other and from the parts placed between them, of the supporting structure, that gases, produced in the welding zone near the beam outlet side, are able to come out through the supporting device.

In welding a workpiece of considerable thickness with an energy beam, as an electron beam, focussed into a focal point on a beam axis, the tendency of molten material flowing out of the welding zone is eliminated or at least considerably reduced by continuously, preferably periodically, changing the focussing condition of the electron beam to shift the focus reciprocatingly along the beam axis. Preferably, the frequency of the shift of the focus along the beam axis is between 5 and 30 cycles per second, and the amplitude of the shift of the focus is at least one third of the thickness of the workpiece.

A beam splitter for electron beam machines with a beam splitter grid which is to be set crossways to the beam and which has a row of cross-pieces running next to one another with uniform spaces for shading the portions of beam striking it, where the cross-piece materials is replaceable in operation by cross-piece material not already acted on by the beam.
