An electrochemical sensor is described for the analysis of ammonia in air functioning in an amperometric measuring operation. The cell consists of either an immobilized organic electrolyte or a water based electrolyte having in both cases a dissolved Mn,salt, which is immediately oxidized by an electrochemical process at a measuring electrode of the cell to Mn,ion, if a pH-shift of the electrolyte in the presence of ammonia takes place. The sensor consists of three electrodes comprising a catalytic active carbon measuring electrode, a second carbon auxiliary electrode (counter electrode) in contact with the electrolyte and a third electrode in contact with the electrolyte, which acts as reference electrode. The sensor can be used for ammonia over a wide range and can be adapted for other uses, such as volatile amines.

Toxic sensor and method of manufacture

The apparatus for determining volatile gases and/or vapor components in a flowing liquid consists basically of a gas analysis instrument (8) which is charged via a sampling tube (9) with the components to be measured which have been freed from the liquid. A carrier gas (17) is passed through a gas inlet tube (11) into the flowing liquid and liberates the gas components to be measured, which are then passed together with the carrier gas (13) through the sampling tube (9) to the gas analysis instrument (8). For this purpose the sampling tube (9) is connected to a dip tube (3) which projects into the liquid and surrounds a porous distributor body (12) for introducing the carrier gas (13) in the form of finely disperse gas bubbles, which distributor body is connected to the gas inlet tube (11) and is subjected to the flow of liquid from the side.

A sensor consists of a catalytically active measuring electrode communicating with a non-polarizable atmospheric oxygen electrode by way of an aqueous acid electrolyte. The electrolyte used is an aqueous gelatinous polymeric adhesive in which ionogenic substances are dissolved. Due to the adhesive properties of the electrolyte, a 3-phase boundary of air-catalyst-electrolyte is formed at the transition to the measuring electrode and substantially determines the measuring process.

Colorimetric measuring arrangement comprising a reaction chamber in which the gas to be measured is absorbed in a reaction liquid and enters into a color reaction. The reaction chamber is in the form of an atomizer in which the reaction liquid is atomized into very fine droplets and thus provides a large surface for the adsorption of gas. The reaction chamber is adjoined by a separation pipe in which the gas phase is re-separated from the reaction liquid. The separation pipe communicates through a liquid guide with an inlet funnel which opens into a micro-throughflow cell. The outlet of the micro-throughflow cell is connected to a siphon. These measures avoid troublesome pulsations in the micro-throughflow cell.
