The air-quantity is metered by a pivotable air-discharge flap which is assigned to the wall opening and is arranged in the lower duct in such a manner that its pivot axis lies on that side of the wall opening which is remote from the air-inlet opening.

This device makes it possible to continue operating the stepping motor in conjunction with its use as an encoder during phases without electrical control, so that the position last reached under electrical control, with a zero-current change in the position, possibly as a result of manual operation of the positioning element that is rotationally or frictionally coupled with the motor rotor, is constantly updated so that the control electronics is informed at all times of the actual position from which the stepping motor is to be controlled electrically to assume a new position. The device not only permits eliminating indexing devices that are subject to wear, but also allows automatic return, for example of a positioning element to its previous starting position after it has been shifted or adjusted from by an outside influence. The device is usable in conjunction with an operating or adjusting element in a vehicle and in this regard is especially advantageously usable in conjunction with an adjusting element that functions as a manual operating element of the heating or air conditioning system.

Apparatus for controlling and adjusting an arbitrary number of adjustment units for a motor vehicle includes an electro-pneumatic bus to which are connected in arbitrary sequence, both electrically and pneumatically, all the pertinent adjusting units. The electro-pneumatic bus is composed of at least one pneumatic adjustment pressure line and of at least one electric control signal line which may contain several conductors. The adjusting units preferably are designed to be modular control loops. A separate air duct having an air outlet opening for the central jet, is connected on the one hand via a cold-air opening to an air-chamber upstream of the heat exchanger and, on the other hand, via a hot-air opening to an air chamber downstream of the heat exchanger. The cross-section of the bypass openings can be controlled by bypass flaps which are coupled with actuators. A control unit with stored characteristics is provided which indicate the correlation between the air quantity and air temperature of the air issuing at the central jet and the position of the bypass flaps. The control unit applies actuation values to the actuators, which actuation values effect a setting of the bypass flaps redetermined by characteristics for a preselected air quantity and air temperature.
