An apparatus for measuring the rate of flow of a fluid such as for measuring the quantities of intake air of internal combustion engines. The apparatus includes a first conductive film and a second conductive film applied to a substrate and which are in thermal contact with one another and are introduced into the flowing medium. The apparatus includes a resistance-measuring arrangement connected to a control function to form a closed loop. The resistance value of the first film is sensed by the resistance-measuring arrangement and, by applying energy, the control function regulates the first film to a temperature dependent on at least the quantity of air flowing past. This apparatus further provides that the output quantity of the control function is applied to the second conductive film, that both conductive films have at least approximately the same sheet resistance, and that their geometry is adapted to each other so that the second film is controlled to at least approximately the temperature of the first film.

An electrical capacitor of a non-impregnated, self-curing type includes a roll or wound body provided with metallic layers. Interspaces between the windings of the roll are filled with a gaseous or vaporous additive substance of a polyatomic hydrocarbon compound which is free of halogens and whose ionization potential is less than the ionization potential of at least a part of decomposition products of dielectric substance of the capacitor. The additive substances makes it possible that in an electric arc of a disruptive breakdown in the dielectric material of the capacitor the charge is taken over by positive ions of the decomposition product and subsequent clusters of breakdowns are substantially prevented. In addition, the additive substances absorb during a breakdown UV photons so that the emission of secondary electrons on the metallic lining is avoided. The additive substances should be substantially free of sulfur and/or nitrogen to avoid the generation of detrimental acids or lyes which would result in the presence of unavoidable residuals of water in the dielectric material and might attack the metallic lining of the capacitor.

The invention is directed to an arrangement for determining the mass rate of flow of a flowing medium, especially the mass rate of flow of air required in the combustion process of an internal combustion engine. The arrangement of the invention includes at least two temperature-dependent resistors which are placed directly in the flowing medium. The arrangement further includes two actively operated bridge connected to respective operational amplifiers. By means of a simple arithmetic coupling of the values of both bridge currents, an output signal is obtained which uniquely serves as an indication of the mass rate of flow and is independent of the temperature of the flowing medium. The condition that the two temperature-dependent resistors are operated at constant temperature independently of the temperature of the flowing medium permits further improvements to be realized. More specifically, the two temperature-dependent resistors can be configured as film resistors on a massive substrate without any loss in the speed of response. By utilizing two temperature-dependent resistors in a single bridge, an improved sensitivity of the arrangement can be obtained and an indication of the direction of flow of the medium can be achieved.

An apparatus is proposed for measuring the mass of a fluid medium such as the mass of air induced by internal combustion engines which has at least one temperature-dependent measuring resistor film disposed in the flow of the medium, whose temperature and/or resistance is regulated in accordance with the mass of the medium and wherein the manipulated variable is a measure for the mass of the medium. The temperature-dependent measuring resistor film is disposed on a carrier separated therefrom by an insulating film and a temperature-dependent heating resistor film. The temperature of the heating resistor film is regulated to approximately the same temperature as the temperature-dependent measuring resistor film so that a heat flow between the temperature-dependent measuring resistor and the carrier is prevented. As a result, the response speed of the apparatus to changes in the flow rate of the medium is substantially improved as is the precision of measurement.

A method for measuring the air quantity supplied to an internal combustion engine by means of a measurement sensor disposed in a bridge circuit having a temperature-dependent resistor (for example, a hot wire or hot film) in the air intake manifold and having a temperature control apparatus, the temperature of the measurement sensor being controlled in an open or closed loop independently of the temperature of the medium to be measured, the properties of the medium to be measured which cause the measurement effect in the hot wire or hot film being dependent on the temperature. With an identical flow quantity but different temperatures in the medium, a correct measurement indication is obtained by making the excess temperature of the hot wire dependent on the temperature of the medium to be measured. The apparatus for open-loop or closed-loop control of this excess temperature contains, in the parallel arm to the quantity measurement device of the bridge circuit, two resistors disposed in sequence, one of which is also disposed in the air intake manifold in order to detect the air temperature, and the total temperature coefficient is set, by means of the selection of the individual temperature coefficients of the two resistors as well as their resistance values, in such a manner that the actual measurement sensor has a controlled excess temperature.

In order to provide immunity against vibrations, a pressure sensor for detecting the prevailing manifold suction pressure in an internal combustion engine, for example, has a movable chamber which responds to the varying pressure and thereby changes the distance between a diffuse reflector and an optical detector assembly. The detector assembly includes a light source, a first light-sensitive detector and a second light-sensitive detector. The second detector is connected to a regulator which so controls the electrical power to the light source that the induced photo current in the second detector remains substantially constant independently of the distance between the reflector and the detectors. The invention relates to pressure differential indicating apparatus in a hydraulic measuring bridge which includes a measuring chamber that is provided with a valve means that emits a throughflow quantity into the chamber to be measured thereby and a further valve element for discharging the throughflow quantity from said chamber. The measuring chamber is associated with a pressure differential sensor having a movable wall which controls the volume of the measuring chamber and is acted upon by the pressure of a measuring medium that pulsates at slightly different pressures. Further, the pressure differential sensor is provided with a signal transmitter for controlling the measuring chamber volume and includes a cylinder having a wall provided with a piston means associated with a piston rod. The piston rod has one free end thereof arranged to cooperate with the signal transmitter and the piston means further includes a sealing means having an extent which cooperates with the cylinder wall to form an annular seal therebetween.

Pressure differential indicating apparatus for a hydraulic measuring

An instrument for giving electrical indications of the distance between two reference points includes a light source, a primary light-sensitive detector and a secondary light-sensitive control detector. Both detectors may be photodiodes. In one embodiment, the light from the source is reflected from a reference plane and is intercepted by the primary detector and by the secondary control detector. The secondary control detector is part of a control loop which adjusts the intensity of the light source in such a manner that the photo current through the secondary control detector remains constant, thus providing compensation for changes in brightness and sensitivity due to aging, soiling and other influences.

Opto-electronic sensor

A fuel injection system for an internal combustion engine is controlled by a follower control loop. The fuel quantity is arbitrarily set by the gas pedal and a first potentiometric transducer generates an electrical command signal. The air flow through the induction tube constitutes the controlled variable whose magnitude is transformed into an electrical signal by a second potentiometer coupled to an air flow rate meter. The two signals are compared at the input of a control amplifier which drives a servomotor. The servomotor adjusts the opening of the air throttle valve of the engine, thereby changing the air flow through the induction tube until the air flow rate meter signals that the air quantity is proportional to the metered out fuel quantity.

Fuel injection system

A fuel injection system for an internal combustion engine whose air induction tube contains an air flow rate measuring member with non-linear operating characteristics, coupled to a potentiometric transducer which produces the electric command variable for a follower control loop. A control amplifier drives a servomotor which sets the metering slide of a fuel metering valve assembly. The servomotor shaft is coupled to a second potentiometric transducer whose output is compared with the command variable in a bridge circuit connected to the input of the control amplifier. The mechanical link between the servomotor and the fuel metering slide has a non-linearity similar to that of the air flow rate measuring member.

The airflow rate through the induction tube of an internal combustion engine is measured by a first transducer which delivers a set point signal to a control amplifier. The amplifier also receives a feedback signal from a second transducer which monitors the position of a servo-motor controlling the quantity of fuel metered out to the engine. The feedback loop maintains a desired fuel-air ratio and includes provision for calibration and adjustment.
