Apparatus for adjusting a rotational relation between a camshaft and a timing pulley of an internal combustion engine of a type having a crankshaft for driving the timing pulley and a cylinder head for rotatably supporting the camshaft, includes a housing receiving a double-acting piston for displacement in an axial direction between two axially spaced end positions and defining with the housing two pressure compartments. Secured to the piston is a control bushing which is geared to the timing pulley via a first gearing and operatively connected to the camshaft via a second gearing. A hydraulic regulating unit is fluidly connected to the pressure compartments via fluid-carrying passageways for alternately supplying a pressure fluid to the pressure compartments to effect an axial displacement of the piston and thereby a positional adjustment of the control bushing, with the fluid-carrying passageways including, for movement of the piston into one of the end positions, two axially spaced distribution spaces which are fluidly connected to each other by transition zones arranged in angularly offset disposition.

A tensioning device for belts, chains and the like particularly for the camshaft drive of an internal combustion engine, with a tension pulley supported on a movable carrier, with a control element, by which in the case of heating, the carrier can be moved via an actuating element against the action of a pressure spring in the slackening direction of the belt characterized in that, the control element consists of a hollow cylindrical sleeve closed at the one end by a bottom and on the other end has a flange extending radially inwards, against which from the inside a washer abuts, which in its center receives a longitudinally movable and sealed pressure piston, in the annular hollow space between the bore of the sleeve and the pressure piston, the pressure spring is arranged whereby it is supported on one hand on the washer and on the other hand on the pressure piston, between the bottom and the pressure piston, whose end face is at a distance from the bottom, a further pressure spring is arranged which with lower resilience opposes the action of the first mentioned pressure spring and the whole inner area of the sleeve is filled with a gas-free expansion fluid and a method of assembling the same.

A tensioning device for belts, chains and similar components especially for the camshaft drive of an internal combustion engine comprising a tension roller mounted on a movable support and a control element by which the support can be moved by an actuating mechanism in the relaxing direction of the belt against the action of a pressure spring when the control element gets heated, characterized in that the control element has a cavity for receiving a pressure liquid whose volume varies as a function of the temperature, the cavity being closed by a membrane connected to the actuating mechanism which operates dependably for long periods of time.

A mechanical-hydraulic actuating element for a belt tightener especially for internal combustion engines comprising a piston (11) guided in a cylinder (10) between which a spring (14) acts so that piston (11) and cylinder (10) are urged apart wherein a pressure space (19) as defined by piston (11) and cylinder (10) is separated from an oil reservoir (16) by a check valve (20) which allows the free oil passsage from the oil reservoir (16) into the pressure space (19) while the annular gap between piston (11) and cylinder (10) is dimensioned so that oil can flow under pressure which counteracts the force of the spring (14) from the pressure space (19) into the oil reservoir (16) through the annular gap, characterized in that the oil reservoir (16) is designed as a circular ring-shaped hollow space which surrounds the cylinder (10) and is defined toward the outside by a hollow cylindrical cup-shaped housing (15) which is sealed at its open end by an elastic bellows seal (29) attached to the housing (15), on the one hand, and to an element (28) connected to the piston (11), on the other hand, and the spring (14) acting between the piston (11) and the cylinder (10) is designed as a helical spring arranged in the circular ring-shaped reservoir space (16).
